sustainability
details:
Packaging
The brand's items are packed in compostable mailers and bags sourced from eco-focused suppliers Better Packaging Co. and Avani Eco. Brunna Co's use of these certified compostable, carbon-neutral packaging solutions demonstrates best-in-class commitment to circular packaging.
Material Sustainability
The brand claims to deliberately select renewable and biodegradable resources, using “only selected plant-based and responsible materials” like natural straw fibers, bamboo, organic textiles, upcycled and deadstock fabrics,” for its designs. Still, synthetic fabrics like polyester and spandex remain present. Many of Brunna's newer garments use REPREVE® polyester, which is Global Recycled Standard (GRS) certified and made from reclaimed plastic bottles or fishing nets.
Much of the material used, from linen and jute to hemp and pandan leaf, are renewable resources that require minimal pesticides or water (linen and hemp, for instance, grow with far less water and no synthetic fertilizer). Additionally, some fabrics, like bamboo, are OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified.
Energy Use and Footprint
The brand's production model relies on artisan handcrafting in Indonesia rather than factory mass-production. This means many products (e.g. handwoven bags, hats) are made with manual techniques, consuming minimal electricity or fossil energy in the fabrication process. By sourcing raw materials locally (straws, leaves, bamboo, etc. are harvested in Bali, Java, Borneo, etc.), Brunna Co cuts down on long supply-chain transport emissions.
However, as a global brand shipping from Indonesia (and with a California base), international transportation is a factor in its footprint. The company has not publicly disclosed any carbon offset program or use of renewable energy in operations.
Waste Management
A core strategy is the use of deadstock and upcycled materials. The company actively prioritizes surplus fabrics and materials that would otherwise be discarded by the fashion industry. The brand's small-batch approach means no excessive inventory that must be destroyed or discounted.
Business Model
Brunna Co's business model actively promotes mindful consumption and eschews the excesses of fast fashion. The brand explicitly operates as a slow fashion label, focusing on quality, timeless design rather than frequent trend-driven launches.
non-toxic
details:
The vast majority of the brand's raw materials are untreated plant fibers (e.g. straw, cotton, bamboo, linen) that contain no hazardous substances by nature. Many of Brunna's artisans employ natural dyes and inks in the crafting process. A striking example is the Borneo Straw Hat, where each Lontar palm straw is “dyed manually with natural ink materials” rather than synthetic chemical dyes.
For its recycled polyester swimwear, Brunna Co sources from reputable suppliers (like REPREVE) that are GRS-certified; such suppliers adhere to restricted substance lists and OEKO-TEX® standards to ensure the recycled fabric is free of harmful residual chemicals. Likewise, some materials are OEKO-TEX Standard 100® certified for non-toxicity.
social responsibility
details:
Brunna Co's founder is Balinese, and she has structured the business to empower artisans economically and socially. All collections are handcrafted by these skilled artisans “from the comfort of their home,” enabling women to earn income while caring for their families. This decentralised, home-based production model means safe and comfortable working conditions, as artisans set their own pace and environment.
Brunna Co is a fully vegan brand, using no animal-derived materials in any of its products.
Brunna Co engages with and gives back to communities in meaningful ways, particularly focusing on its artisan communities and environmental awareness. First and foremost, the brand's business itself uplifts local communities in Bali and neighboring regions. Beyond its immediate supply chain, Brunna Co has taken on at least some broader social or environmental initiatives. Notably, it created an exclusive Sumatran Tiger Clutch as part of a campaign to “shine the light” on Indonesia's critically endangered Sumatran tigers.
