Packaging

Product packaging is simple and plastic-free (often just paper or cardboard wraps), making it easy for consumers to recycle. Packaging is made from FSC-certified cardboard.

Material Sustainability

Recycled materials are the cornerstone of Nomadix’s products. All Nomadix in-house textiles (towels, blankets, ponchos, etc.) are made from post-consumer recycled plastics, with each product containing at least 90% recycled material. By repurposing millions of plastic bottles (over 18 million in 2023 alone into durable textiles, Nomadix reduces demand for virgin polyester and diverts waste from landfills. The brand’s fabrics are Global Recycle Standard (GRS) certified to ensure verified recycled content and responsible production. One area to watch is microplastic shedding: like all synthetic textiles, these recycled polyester products can release microscopic fibers when washed.

Energy Use and Footprint

Nomadix exhibits a proactive approach to managing and reducing its carbon footprint. The company is Climate Neutral Certified (through The Change Climate Project), meaning it measures its total greenhouse gas emissions and offsets them fully. Impressively, by 2023 the brand had lowered its carbon footprint by 80% compared to 2021. They also began sourcing 50% of their office/warehouse electricity from renewables and transitioned shipping boxes (“master cartons”) to 100% recycled content. Nomadix has set a science-aligned goal to halve emissions by 2030.

Waste Management

Nomadix’s business model inherently addresses waste by using waste as a resource. Their products give a second life to post-consumer plastics, mitigating waste at the source. Each towel or blanket repurposes dozens of discarded bottles. Additionally, Nomadix set a goal to eliminate all virgin plastic from production. One area not explicitly covered in Nomadix’s public materials is an end-of-life program; there’s no mention of take-back or recycling of used Nomadix products yet.

Business Model

Nomadix is structured as a Social Purpose Corporation (SPC), embedding social and environmental goals into its legal mission. The company also demonstrates accountability and transparency uncommon in small brands: it publishes annual sustainability reports (as an SPC), seeks third-party certifications, and openly shares goals and progress. On the market side, Nomadix does release many new graphic designs, but largely for the same core products, indicating growth without expanding into unsustainable product lines.

non-toxic

Non-toxic
score:
7.0 out of 10

details:

The recycled polyester and nylon fibers used are OEKO-TEX and Bluesign-adjacent by virtue of the GRS certification, which imposes restrictions on harmful substances in production. Importantly, Nomadix has moved to PFAS-free water-resistant coatings: for instance, its adventure blankets and gear use a plant-based durable water repellent (DWR) that contains no PFAS “forever chemicals.” There is no evidence of problematic chemicals like PVC, phthalates, or flame retardants in any Nomadix product. In fact, the simplicity of their material palette (mostly recycled PET and low-impact dyes for prints) means fewer chemical risks overall.

details:

Nomadix takes responsibility for ethical manufacturing despite a relatively small supply chain. All production is done at a single partner factory in China dedicated to Nomadix products. To ensure fair labor, Nomadix has adopted the Outdoor Industry Association’s Fair Labor Code of Conduct. This code commits the company (and by extension its suppliers) to uphold international labor standards: no forced or child labor, no harassment or discrimination, fair wages and benefits, reasonable working hours, and safe working conditions.

Nomadix’s in-house textile range is entirely vegan and cruelty-free.

Nomadix is deeply engaged in community and environmental initiatives, far beyond its own business interests. The company is a certified 1% for the Planet member, donating 1% of all sales (not just profit) to environmental nonprofits. Moreover, Nomadix’s status as a Social Purpose Corporation means it must consider community and societal benefits in its decisions and report on them, ensuring ongoing accountability.
