Overview:

Sustainability 6.1/10
Non-toxicity 5.5/10

Ceremonia is a clean haircare brand centering Latinx heritage and Latin American botanical ingredients across a line of shampoos, conditioners, scalp oils, scrubs, masks, and styling products sold direct-to-consumer and through Sephora.

Sustainability

score : 6.1/10

Packaging

The brand has published a detailed rationale explaining that it chose PCR PET over glass because PCR requires less energy to produce, weighs less in transit, and avoids the highly energy-intensive glass remelting process. It has also chosen sugarcane-derived material for its tubes and cornstarch pouches for its accessories. Packaging claims are backed by a Plastic-Negative partnership with rePurpose Global: for every product Ceremonia sells, twice the amount of nature-bound plastic is collected and repurposed from the environment. This is a third-party-verified offset mechanism rather than an on-pack certification. The bottles are still plastic (albeit recycled), pumps and closures are plastic, and there is no refill, buyback, or closed-loop return program. Offsetting plastic use is valuable but does not replace source reduction, glass or aluminum alternatives, or true circular systems.

Ingredient Sustainability

Ceremonia's identity is built around ingredients sourced from Latin America, specifically Brazil, Peru, Mexico, Bolivia, the Dominican Republic, and Guatemala. The brand states that its formulas are roughly 95% plant-based and are free of silicones, sulfates, parabens, phthalates, and artificial colorants.

Across the representative products sampled, several plant-based ingredients are sustainably sourced. Several plant-based ingredients are generally considered sustainable (of low concern). Meadowfoam seed oil, rice bran oil, castor seed oil, sunflower extract, rosemary leaf extract, aloe vera, chia seed oil, rapeseed oil, avocado oil, and maracujá (passion fruit) seed oil all qualify as low-input crops, agricultural byproducts, or both. Guava leaf and fruit extract, papaya ferment, prickly pear (Opuntia) fruit extract, and tamarind extract are regional, hardy, and generally low-impact when farmed responsibly.

However, the synthetic ingredient footprint is more present than in the plant-forward marketing suggests. The Guava Leave-In Conditioner contains polyquaternium-10, polyquaternium-55, VP/VA Copolymer, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, and polyisobutene, all of which carry environmental persistence concerns.

Energy Use & Carbon Footprint

Ceremonia runs 100% carbon-neutral customer and freight shipping through its partnership with the Change Climate Project, which funds forestry, energy efficiency, and renewable energy projects.

Ceremonia has not published a total greenhouse gas inventory across its manufacturing and supply chain, set science-based emissions reduction targets, or pursued third-party carbon certification such as Climate Neutral Certified or the Science Based Targets initiative. Manufacturing is described by the brand as taking place "both locally and globally," with little specificity, which limits the ability to assess carbon impacts from sourcing ingredients from across Latin America and shipping them to finished-goods manufacturers.

Waste Management

Ceremonia's most developed waste initiative is its Plastic-Negative program with rePurpose Global, which funds the collection of twice as much ocean-bound and nature-bound plastic as the brand uses in its own packaging. The brand pairs this with 100% recyclable PCR PET bottles, and where possible uses sugarcane tubes and cornstarch pouches for accessories. All jars, bottles, and pumps are single-use even when made of recycled content, and Ceremonia has explicitly argued against refill formats and biodegradable bioplastics rather than piloting them.

Business Model

Originally a single-product brand (Aceite de Moska), Ceremonia now offers shampoos, conditioners, leave-ins, rescue sprays, hair masks, scalp scrubs, scalp oils, dry shampoos, gloss drops, fragrance, bundles, starter kits, seasonal gift sets, and accessories such as a scalp massager and hair towel.

Marketing messaging emphasizes self-care rituals but also leans heavily on newness, limited editions, and gift occasions, which are patterns that tend to drive higher consumption frequency rather than slower, more intentional use.

Non-toxicity

score : 5.5/10

Ceremonia formulas are explicitly free of sulfates, parabens, phthalates, silicones, mineral oils, and artificial colorants across the line. Many formulas also qualify for Sephora's Clean at Sephora and Credo Beauty's Clean Standard, both of which restrict an additional list of flagged ingredients. The coconut-derived surfactant system used across the shampoos is notably gentler than the sulfates common in mainstream haircare.

There are more synthetic-polymer-heavy and more fragrance-reliant ingredients in some of their products. For example, polyquaternium-7, polyquaternium-10, and polyquaternium-55 appear across multiple products, including the Guava Leave-In Conditioner and Guava Shampoo. These are water-soluble but environmentally persistent synthetic polymers. Synthetic fragrance ("Parfum / Fragrance") is present in most products. Under US labeling rules, fragrance is a single ingredient declaration that can mask 30 to 200 individual compounds, and Ceremonia does not publish a full fragrance disclosure on its own site.

The brand also does not carry independent health-safety certifications such as EWG Verified or Made Safe that would substantiate a higher non-toxicity rating.

Social Responsibility

score : 6.5/10

Fair Labor

Ceremonia is a small, founder-led company (reported to have around seven employees as of 2025) operating with meaningful leadership diversity and a Latina founder, which are meaningful signals at the company level. Ingredients are sourced from a range of Latin American countries (Brazil, Peru, Mexico, Bolivia, Dominican Republic, Guatemala), many of which carry documented labor risk for agricultural workers, but Ceremonia does not currently publish Fair Trade, Rainforest Alliance, SA8000, Fair Wear Foundation, or equivalent certifications for its supplier base. There is no published supply chain map, no living-wage disclosure, and no annual social responsibility or impact report.

Animal Welfare

Ceremonia is certified by the Leaping Bunny Organization, the only internationally recognized cruelty-free certification that audits a brand's entire supply chain, including ingredient suppliers, for animal testing. All Ceremonia products are also certified vegan through the same Leaping Bunny program. Safety testing is performed via Repeat Insult Patch Test (RIPT), PET, stability testing, and human clinical studies rather than animal testing, and Ceremonia does not sell in markets that mandate animal testing.

Community Engagement

Ceremonia is a 1% for the Planet business member, which means it has publicly committed to donating at least 1% of all sales to environmental nonprofits, with the donations verifiable through 1% for the Planet's annual certification process. This is a real, third-party-verified contribution mechanism rather than a self-reported pledge. [2]

The brand has also been a visible advocate for Latinx representation in beauty, becoming the first Latina-founded haircare brand to launch nationwide at Sephora, opening a flagship community space in New York, and using its platform to support other BIPOC founders in the industry. Babba Rivera has been explicit in interviews about the brand's mission to drive representation and inclusivity in an industry where Latinx founders remain severely underfunded.
