Packaging

Dior has introduced some recycled materials into packaging. For instance, its lip gloss tubes use Eastman Cristal Renew co-polyester with 30% certified recycled content, reducing reliance on virgin plastic. Still, the brand relies heavily on non-recyclable, virgin plastics.


Ingredient Sustainability

Many Dior makeup and skincare products still include non-renewable or environmentally persistent ingredients. For instance, a representative Dior foundation contains multiple petroleum-derived polymers and silicones (e.g. acrylate copolymers, dimethicone) for texture, and the iconic mascara formula uses paraffin wax and plastic resins (styrene/acrylates copolymer) to achieve volume. Even a Dior lipstick with a largely plant-based wax/oil base incorporates synthetic components like Dimethicone and aluminum hydroxide alongside its sunflower and carnauba waxes.

Energy Use and Footprint


The company’s goal is a 46–53% absolute reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 (vs. 2019). To achieve this, Dior is transitioning all operations to renewable power, targeting 100% renewable electricity in its own production sites and offices by 2026. Dior and LVMH have already implemented on-site solar and purchase green energy, moving steadily toward carbon-neutral facilities.

Waste Management

The brand is actively removing single-use plastics and excess material from its packaging. For example, by lightweighting components and eliminating cellophane wrap on some products, with a stated goal of halving packaging weight per formula by 2030. Unlike a few competitors, Dior has not rolled out a broad consumer take-back or empties recycling program for used product containers (beyond what local municipal recycling covers).

Business Model

Dior’s core revenue still depends on selling high volumes of prestige items, and many of its sustainability initiatives (refills, etc.) are positioned as enhancements to the luxury experience rather than fundamental reductions in volume. The brand has not indicated moves toward product rental, resale, or other radical circular economy models in beauty.

In 2022, Parfums Christian Dior published a stringent Responsible Formulation Charter that exceeds regulatory requirements and explicitly defines its clean beauty standards. Under this policy, Dior excludes a host of contentious substances from new product formulas. Parabens, formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, phthalates (e.g. DEP), BHA, oxybenzone and octocrylene (UV filters), MI/MCI preservatives, triclosan, cyclic silicones (D4, D5), and others are all banned or being phased out in Dior’s latest launches. Fragrance (parfum) is present in nearly all Dior skincare and makeup products, which can pose irritation or sensitization risks for sensitive individuals (Dior has not eliminated synthetic fragrance allergens, choosing to keep the signature luxurious scents in products).

Social Responsibility

Dior requires all its suppliers and subcontractors to adhere to the LVMH Supplier Code of Conduct, which forbids child labor, forced labor, and unsafe working conditions, and mandates compliance with labor laws. In the cosmetics realm, no major public scandals have linked Dior to labor abuses in factories or mines (for instance, Dior prefers synthetic mica in its formulas.


Dior is not a cruelty-free beauty brand, reflecting industry realities for global luxury companies. The company adheres to EU regulations banning animal testing on cosmetics and finished products in Europe, and it invests in alternative safety testing methods. However, Dior continues to sell cosmetics in markets like mainland China, where until recently regulators required certain imported cosmetics to undergo animal tests.

A flagship initiative is the Women@Dior mentorship program, launched in 2017 in partnership with UNESCO. Through Women@Dior, the company’s employees volunteer as mentors to young women (students and recent graduates) around the world, providing guidance in careers and leadership. To date this international program has supported over 1,800 young women from 50+ countries.
