sustainability
details:
Packaging
Friendsheep packaging is entirely plastic-free. Where external packaging is needed, the brand uses organic unbleached cotton muslin bags, or 100% tree-free Lokta paper bags. All packaging is either fully recyclable or compostable.
Material Sustainability
The wool used to make Friendsheep's products is sourced from a variety of small farms in New Zealand that adhere to ethical sheep raising and sheering practices (no mulesing).
Energy Use and Footprint
There is little to no information regarding energy use and footprint when it comes to production and manufacturing. Friendsheep products are made by hand by underprivileged women and people with disabilities in Kathmandu, Nepal in a cottage industry operation, from which we can infer a lower than average CO2 output.
Waste Management
There is little to no information available regarding efforts to mitigate waste in production. Reusable dryer balls inherently reduce waste associated with the single-use dryer sheets they replace.
Business Model
Friendsheep is a small business that works with underprivileged artisans to create a small, evergreen inventory. Their business model incorporates slow, conscious consumption in a number of meaningful ways.
non-toxic
details:
Friendsheep's products are handmade using only water and vegetable soap, before being sun-dried. They do not use any chemicals in the production process and therefor do not release chemicals into washes when used. The brand is entirely toxin-free.
social responsibility
details:
Friendsheep takes meaningful steps to support underprivileged artisans in Nepal (providing fair wages, education, and healthcare). These efforts are both measurable and impactful. They only work with wool suppliers who practice ethical sheep raising and wool harvesting. They are also members of 1% for the planet and 1 tree planted. They have donated to a number of environmental organizations and have worked to plant more than 1 million trees in Madagascar.
