Helwe demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainable packaging through reusable and recyclable containers. All product packaging is designed to be recyclable (e.g. glass bottles and jars, recyclable plastics)

The brand incorporates recyclable materials and invites customers to return individual containers, which demonstrates intent to employ a more circular approach (vs. a typical single-use model). However, the brand still relies heavily on plastics for their primary packaging.

Notably, Helwe has implemented a bottle return initiative: customers can return empty Helwe bottles to be cleaned and reused, and are rewarded with loyalty points for doing so.

Ingredient Sustainability

Helwe’s formulations rely almost entirely on natural, renewable ingredients with minimal synthetic content, reflecting a top-tier sustainable sourcing profile. Across a sample of five product ingredient lists, the core ingredients are plant-derived, biodegradable, and responsibly sourced:

Their Prodige Démaquillant Hydratant (oil cleanser) is composed of botanical oils – jojoba, macadamia, sunflower, apricot – plus calendula flower extract and vitamin E. These ingredients are renewable crops or natural extracts that biodegrade readily and have low eco-toxicity. Other products such as Brume Revitalisante (revitalizing mist) contains floral hydrosols (lavender, geranium, helichrysum, cistus), aloe vera juice, and a natural preservative system. The formula includes eco-friendly preservatives accepted in natural cosmetics – benzyl alcohol, benzoic acid, dehydroacetic acid – which in the low concentrations used have minimal environmental impact and are readily degradable. Notably, no microplastics, silicones, or non-biodegradable polymers are present (ingredients like PEGs or carbomers are absent). All components (herbal waters, glycerin, coconut extract, etc.) should break down without persisting in ecosystems.

Across these products, Helwe avoids environmentally problematic inputs. No persistent microplastics, no non-biodegradable polymers, no silicones, no petrochemical surfactants, and no unsustainably harvested materials were found in the ingredients lists.

Energy Use & Footprint

The brand has not published data on its energy usage, manufacturing emissions, or carbon footprint. There is no public carbon neutrality claim or renewable energy usage report for Helwe’s production. 

Waste Management

Helwe exhibits a proactive approach to waste reduction, particularly regarding packaging waste and product end-of-life. The standout initiative is its container-return program, which directly tackles post-consumer waste.

In terms of manufacturing waste, Helwe has not published specifics, but given its small-batch production, we can infer a relatively lean process. 

For post-consumer product waste, Helwe’s items are meant to be fully used by the customer (no single-use disposables). The ingredients, as noted, are biodegradable, so any remnants that go down the drain (e.g. cleanser washing off) won’t harm the environment. The brand even offers a reef-safe mineral sunscreen, indicating attention to preventing ecological harm.

Business Model

Helwe’s business model encourages quality, slow consumption over fast, disposable trends. The brand’s product lineup is focused on core skincare needs, and while it has a full range, it does not push incessant product churn. They encourage consumers to invest in a few high-quality, multi-benefit products and to stick with a consistent regimen.
