Packaging
Lily Lolo’s packaging is a mix of modest progress and conventional choices. The signature loose mineral products, including the bestselling Mineral Foundation, ship in plastic sifter jars, and most cream compacts, mascara tubes and lipstick bullets rely on plastic components as well. The brand has stated it is moving toward post-consumer recycled plastic, but it does not publish what proportion of its packaging currently uses recycled content, and there is no third-party packaging certification to substantiate recyclability or recycled-content claims.
The clearest bright spot is the Mineral Foundation refill: customers buy the plastic jar once and top it up from a recyclable paper sachet, which meaningfully cuts the plastic used per gram of product over the life of the jar. This is welcome step. The limitation is that the refill model is confined to the foundation rather than extended across the range, so for most of the catalogue the packaging story is still single-jar plastic.
Glass and metal appear in some components, but plastic remains the dominant material.
Ingredient Sustainability
Lily Lolo’s formulas are built on a base of inert mineral pigments combined, in the wet products, with plant-derived oils and waxes.
The mineral component is, on the whole, low-impact from an environmental standpoint: these are abundant, geologically plentiful materials used in small quantities, and the loose mineral products in particular are essentially anhydrous pigment blends with very short ingredient lists.
The plant oils that appear in the cream and lip formulas lean toward the more sustainable end of the spectrum. Jojoba is drought-tolerant and perennial; sunflower and grapeseed oils are widely cultivated, with grapeseed in particular often a byproduct of the wine industry; safflower is drought-resistant. These are encouraging choices.
Argan oil appears in both the Cream Foundation and the Vegan Lipstick, and argan sits among the more pressured botanicals: surging global demand has driven overharvesting and monoculture pressure on Moroccan argan forests, and responsible sourcing typically depends on Fair Trade or cooperative certification. Lily Lolo does not state how its argan is sourced.
The mineral side carries its own caveat: mica is mined in regions associated with labour and ecological concerns, and although the brand says its suppliers hold certificates confirming regulatory compliance and ethical sourcing without child labour, we could not confirm membership of an initiative such as the Responsible Mica Initiative that would independently verify the supply chain.
Energy Use and Carbon Footprint
This is the weakest area of Lily Lolo’s sustainability profile, primarily because of an absence of disclosure.
We found no published greenhouse-gas inventory, no emissions targets, no use of renewable energy claims, and no carbon offsetting or neutrality program. The brand manufactures roughly 90% of its products in the UK with the remainder elsewhere in Europe, which keeps supply lines comparatively short and avoids the high-carbon profile of long intercontinental freight, and its small scale means its absolute footprint is likely modest.
Waste Management
The standout is again the foundation refill system, which is a real circularity measure: it keeps a plastic jar in use and replaces repeat jar purchases with a recyclable paper sachet, reducing per-use packaging waste. As a small-scale operation, the brand also inherently generates less production waste than a mass-market manufacturer, a factor we weigh favourably. Set against this, the refill program does not extend across the catalogue, there is no buyback or take-back scheme, and the loose-powder format, while long-lasting, is largely single-jar.
Business Model
Lily Lolo’s business model aligns well with slow, intentional consumption. The range is built around evergreen staples rather than seasonal drops or trend-chasing collections, and the flagship Mineral Foundation has anchored the line for around two decades, which is the opposite of high churn.
