Packaging
Orchid & Ash utilizes 100% recyclable materials and responsibly sourced paper for secondary packaging. Their paperboard boxes are FSC-certified, indicating the cardboard is from sustainably managed forests. Primary containers are made from glass. Plastic usage is minimal; most products come in glass, with only small plastic components (e.g. spray caps or pumps). Importantly, Orchid & Ash has acknowledged that the “little bit of plastic... on our caps” is recycled material.
Ingredient Sustainability
Rather than relying on petrochemical aroma compounds, the brand selects nature-identical molecules and essential oils that avoid the heavy ecological footprint of some natural extracts. For instance, certain scent notes (like musk or amber) are produced via synthetic analogs to prevent animal sourcing or overharvesting of plants. The brand explicitly notes that “natural is not always better” in perfumery and that using lab-made components can be more sustainable and less allergenic. All fragrance ingredients comply with Credo’s strict Clean Standard (no polycyclic musks, phthalates, etc.). While the exact source of each aroma chemical isn’t detailed, the commitment to safety and the ISO 9235 natural standard for any “all-natural” labeled scents suggest a conscientious approach.
Orchid & Ash’s candles use a plant-based wax blend and natural aromatics, avoiding any petroleum paraffin or synthetic additives.
Orchid & Ash’s ingredients are predominantly sustainably sourced and biodegradable, with careful inclusion of only safe, low-toxicity synthetics when necessary. The brand avoids problematic inputs like palm oil, petrochemicals, or non-renewable minerals.
Energy & Footprint
On the plus side, the company’s products are made in the USA (California) in a small studio, and it only ships within the US. Local production and limited distribution range mean reduced transportation emissions, as there is no long supply chain shipping goods overseas. The small-batch, hand-poured manufacturing likely consumes relatively low energy compared to industrial cosmetics factories.
However, Orchid & Ash has not publicly disclosed any carbon footprint measurements, reduction targets, or offset initiatives. We found no mention of using renewable energy at their studio (e.g. solar power) or purchasing carbon offsets for shipping.
Waste Management
On the production side, all products are made in micro batches, which inherently helps minimize waste: making goods in small quantities means the brand is less likely to over-produce inventory that goes unsold. During use and after use, Orchid & Ash encourages waste reduction primarily through reuse and recycling. However, we did not find evidence of more advanced waste mitigation programs such as a take-back or refill scheme.
Business Model
Orchid & Ash maintains a relatively small, curated range of products: a handful of signature scents across candles, two core perfumes, a couple of body care items, and some ritual sprays. This limited selection suggests the brand is not inundating the market with constant new releases or seasonal collections. Instead, it focuses on perfecting a core lineup.
