Ingedient Sustainability

Each throw blanket is knit from a special blend of approximately 75% recycled cotton and 25% recycled polyester (RPET), with a small balance of other fibers. This means at least three-fourths of the material is upcycled cotton, sourced from apparel factory cutting scraps, and the rest comes from post-consumer plastic bottles transformed into polyester yarn. By using pre-dyed cotton scraps, no new dyeing is required, which saves water and avoids chemical runoff, and the recycling process consumes less energy than producing virgin cotton.

Both materials carry reputable certifications: the yarns are certified by the Global Recycle Standard (GRS) to ensure authenticity and high recycled content.

Energy Use and Footprint

Seek & Swoon notes that its upcycled cotton yarn avoids many resource-intensive steps of farming and dyeing, thereby lowering carbon emissions and energy demand per blanket. While the company has not disclosed use of renewable energy at its partner mill or any carbon offset program, the inherent footprint of each throw is lower thanks to recycled inputs and domestic production.

Waste Management

On the front end, the company's entire model is about waste reduction – it rescues cotton scraps from cutting-room floors and repurposes plastic waste. However, when it comes to end-of-life disposal, there are challenges. Each blanket is a cotton/polyester blend, which currently is difficult to fully recycle in municipal systems. If a Seek & Swoon throw is eventually discarded, the cotton component may biodegrade over time, but the polyester will not.
