Utu is a boutique outdoor skincare brand creating high-performance mineral sunscreens that protect skin while prioritizing environmental sustainability.

Highlights:

Sustainability

score : 6.8/10

Packaging

The brand uses zero virgin plastic in all product containers. Instead, Utu packages its sunscreens in 100% recyclable materials like aluminum tubes and tins, plus cardboard that is sourced with FSC certification. Even traditionally problematic components, such as tube liners and caps, were engineered to be plastic-free. In addition, the sunscreen stick is refillable, allowing customers to reuse the durable aluminum/cardboard tube and simply replace the inner stick. This refill system keeps packaging in use longer and cuts overall waste.

Ingredient Sustainability

Utu’s product formulas are predominantly composed of bio-based ingredients, but with some nuances. The active sunscreen agent in all products is non-nano zinc oxide, a mineral UV filter that is sourced from earth minerals (inorganic but naturally occurring) and is safe for marine life. Beyond zinc, Utu includes many botanical ingredients. For example, sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, sesame seed oil, coconut oil, shea butter, sea buckthorn extract, aloe vera, and candelilla or carnauba waxes are found across the line. These ingredients are generally renewable and biodegradable, especially when responsibly farmed. However, Utu provides little detail on their sourcing. Notably, one ingredient is Elaeis Guineensis (palm) butter, which can be linked to deforestation and monoculture plantations if not sustainably produced. Utu does not mention RSPO certification or sustainable sourcing for its palm-derived component, so it’s unclear if this high-impact crop is mitigated.

Utu also relies on a few synthetic or lab-made ingredients for performance. For instance, formulas include compounds like Ethylhexyl Methoxycrylene and Diethylhexyl 2,6-Naphthalate, which act as photostabilizers for the formula, as well as Polymethylsilsesquioxane (a silicone-based powder for texture) and Triethoxycaprylylsilane (a coating for the zinc oxide particles). These synthetic additives are used to improve stability, feel, and longevity of the sunscreen. While they are effective and present in small proportions, they are typically petroleum-derived or not readily biodegradable.

Energy & Footprint

Climate footprint transparency is one area where Utu provides little information. The brand does not report its carbon emissions or explicitly discuss manufacturing energy sources.

Waste Management

Utu takes several steps to reduce waste throughout the product life cycle. First, as noted, the sunscreen stick is refillable, which significantly cuts down on packaging waste over time. Second, Utu’s product design leans into multi-purpose use. For example, the Hydrating Sun Balm SPF50 is formulated for both lips and face, eliminating the need to buy separate lip balm and face sunscreen products. However, aside from packaging innovations, there is no mention of a take-back or recycling program specific to the brand.

Business Model

Utu’s business model reflects a “slow beauty” philosophy focused on longevity and purpose rather than rapid product turnover. The brand launched with just a handful of products and remains tightly focused on sun care essentials. As of recent reports, Utu offers three core formulations sold individually or in kits, essentially a curated line of four or five SKUs including a refill. This restrained approach means Utu is not flooding the market with new releases every season or chasing short-term trends.

Non-toxicity

score : 10.0/10

The brand has a strict blacklist of ingredients it will not use, which includes many known or suspected toxins and irritants. For example, Utu never uses chemical UV filters like oxybenzone or octinoxate. These compounds are not only linked to hormone disruption and reef damage, but also banned in places like Hawaii for their environmental impact.

Likewise, Utu’s formulas contain no parabens, phthalates, petrolatum, formaldehyde-releasers, synthetic dyes, or synthetic fragrances. This means the products are free from common preservatives and additives that have been flagged for carcinogenicity (e.g. some formaldehyde donors) or endocrine disruption (e.g. parabens). The absence of synthetic fragrance is particularly important for non-toxicity, as it eliminates unknown mixtures of potentially allergenic or phthalate-containing scent chemicals.

Social Responsibility

score : 7.2/10

Fair Labor

Product manufacturing is in the United States, which means the final assembly and production occur under U.S. labor laws (providing some baseline assurances of legal wages and workplace standards for that stage of the supply chain). However, Utu does not disclose details about the sourcing of its raw ingredients from a labor standpoint. Many ingredients (such as shea butter, coconut oil, palm-derived materials, etc.) are globally sourced commodities often associated with challenging labor conditions in their countries of origin. Utu has not indicated that it uses any fair trade certified ingredients, nor provided transparency into farms or communities supplying their botanicals.

Animal Welfare

The brand is certified by Leaping Bunny, a reputable international cruelty-free standard. This certification verifies that none of Utu’s products or ingredients are tested on animals at any stage of development. Leaping Bunny also requires that suppliers and manufacturers in the supply chain comply with the no-animal-testing policy.

Community Engagement

Despite being a relatively young and small company, Utu demonstrates meaningful community and environmental engagement beyond its products. The brand has formed partnerships and support programs with several organizations, especially those aligned with outdoor recreation and environmental conservation. For instance, Utu is the official Outdoor Skincare partner of the Clean Ocean Project, a charity focused on protecting oceans and coastlines and combating plastic pollution. Utu provides its reef-safe, plastic-free sunscreens to the Clean Ocean Project team and publicly shares the mission, effectively using its platform to highlight ocean conservation.
