Packaging
Instead of using polybags, each panty comes in a paper box made from 80% post-consumer recycled material, with no plastic packaging at all. The remaining paper materials (like the “panty bands” and hang tags) are sourced from FSC-certified sustainable paper.
Material Sustainability
Panty Promise's products are made almost entirely from sustainable materials, with minor trade-offs for functionality. We reviewed material lists for five different Panty Promise styles (e.g. thong, hipster, bikini, brief, shortie) and found a consistent composition: an outer fabric of 80% organic cotton blended with 20% elastane (spandex) for stretch, plus a gusset liner of 100% organic cotton.
The organic cotton used is certified by Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and Oeko-Tex Standard 100, ensuring the fiber is grown without synthetic pesticides and processed with environmentally responsible methods. Moreover, the company sources its fabric from a luxury Italian mill with ISO 9001 quality certification. The brand is also a Cotton Leads partner with Cotton Incorporated, implying a commitment to ethically harvested cotton and sustainable farming practices. The elastane (spandex) component is a petroleum-derived synthetic, which is not biodegradable, but it is kept to a modest 20% to provide necessary stretch.
Energy Use and Footprint
Panty Promise has not publicly disclosed data on its energy usage, carbon footprint, or detailed supply chain emissions, which makes it difficult to assess this category. The brand does take steps that indirectly reduce its footprint. For example, using organic cotton reduces greenhouse gas emissions and water usage compared to conventional cotton. Additionally, manufacturing is done at an ISO 9001-certified facility, which could imply efficient processes.
However, there is no evidence of Panty Promise utilizing renewable energy in production or offsetting carbon emissions from manufacturing and shipping. Their supply chain spans multiple regions (organic cotton milled in Italy, garments made in Sri Lanka, and sold primarily in North America, which likely entails a significant transportation footprint.
Waste Management
In terms of product end-of-life, the brand explicitly designed its underwear to be more biodegradable than conventional underwear garments because, as they acknowledge, “the panty market cannot be moved into resale.” For production waste, Panty Promise's manufacturing partner in Sri Lanka utilizes modern laser-cutting and seamless knitting technology, which likely generates minimal fabric scraps.
Business Model
Panty Promise's business model balances between promoting healthy consumption and potentially encouraging frequent repurchases. On one hand, the brand positions itself firmly against “fast fashion.” The brand also invests in customer education about garment care (with a dedicated “Wash Care” guide) to prolong product life.
On the other hand, Panty Promise does encourage a regular replacement cycle for hygiene reasons. This model, while beneficial for ensuring fresh undergarments, inherently promotes continuous consumption. It could lead to over-consumption if customers replace products more often than truly necessary for durability reasons.
