Packaging
Most of the range sits in materials that can be recycled again and again without losing quality. Balms, lip products and several sunscreens come in steel tins, face and body oils are bottled in glass, and the beauty balm lids were switched from plastic to aluminum. Cartons and sleeves are FSC certified, printed with water based coatings and low toxicity inks, and the tins themselves are sturdy enough that customers reuse them.
The gap is in the formats that need a tube or a pump. Sunscreen tubes are half post consumer plastic and half new plastic, the baby wash bottles are fully post consumer plastic with caps at 25%, and the tins still carry a thin plastic shrink band. Badger has been unusually open about why, explaining that its in house filling equipment was built for plastic tubes, and it has said it is testing metal tubes and paper based tamper seals. For the foaming washes it funds ocean plastic recovery through the ReSea Project at a one to one weight ratio. The absence of any refill or container return option across the whole line is the main thing holding this score below the top band.
Ingredient Sustainability
Nearly every plant input across the range is certified organic, which takes synthetic pesticide and fertilizer load off the farms Badger buys from, and the company buys close to the source with documented, long running supplier relationships including olive oil in Spain, argan in Morocco, rose in Bulgaria and bergamot in Italy. Formulas are palm free, which matters given how routinely palm derivatives turn up in soap and balm bases, and the cocoa butter is Fair Trade Certified. The base oils carry a genuinely light footprint. Olive, sunflower, castor, calendula and chamomile are hardy, low input crops, and jojoba is drought tolerant and perennial, so it holds soil rather than exhausting it. Some sunflower oil is grown to Demeter biodynamic standards.
osa damascena, the rose otto used across the Damascus Rose line, is one of the most resource hungry ingredients in personal care, since it takes thousands of hand picked blossoms to distill a small volume of oil, and organic certification does nothing to address that land and water demand. Geranium and citronella, both used in the bug repellent range, are typically grown in large monocultures that deplete soil nutrients and reduce biodiversity in tropical growing regions. Argan and baobab come from slow growing trees under real harvesting pressure as global demand climbs, although Badger sources its argan through Moroccan women's cooperatives, which is the better route.
Its regenerative agriculture work is still described as exploratory rather than verified. The mined inputs, zinc oxide, mica and iron oxides, sit outside the organic framework entirely and rely on supplier assurances rather than independent audit.
Energy Use and Carbon Footprint
Badger runs its entire operation on a 1,445 panel, 524 kilowatt solar array installed at its Gilsum site in 2020, generating roughly 600,000 kilowatt hours a year and covering both manufacturing and offices. The building was purpose built to LEED Silver specification using heavy insulation and timber frame construction. Almost everything is made in house in New Hampshire rather than contract manufactured overseas, which shortens the finished goods journey, and a large share of the line is waterless, so less weight and volume moves through freight for the same number of uses. The company committed at COP25 to reach net zero across all three emissions scopes by 2030, two decades ahead of the Paris timeline.
What is missing is evidence of progress. Badger has not published a greenhouse gas inventory, has not had emissions figures verified by a third party, and has not reported publicly against the 2030 target in recent years.
Waste Management
Waste handling inside the factory is good. Badger reports diverting more than 95% of the waste it generates in manufacturing, and it puts leftovers back to work rather than discarding them, including using surplus balm to finish the timber inside its own building. Waterless, concentrated formats mean less material per use, and the balms are deliberately multi purpose, so one tin covers jobs that would otherwise take three products. Ocean plastic recovery through the ReSea Project offsets the plastic used in the foaming wash bottles.
The shortfall is at the customer end. There is no refill system, no container return or buyback, and no upcycled ingredient stream.
Business Model
The range is built to last rather than to turn over. The original balm from 1995 is still the flagship product, the catalogue is largely evergreen, and the formulas are concentrated and slow to finish, which lengthens the gap between repurchases. Marketing leans on how the products work and what is in them rather than on urgency, and the ingredient and processing information Badger publishes is more thorough than most of the category offers.
