Sustainable Summer
your sustainable summer
What you put on your skin, in the water, and on the beach this summer has a real impact. We curated the most-trusted sustainable and non-toxic summer essentials so you can enjoy the season without compromising your values.
what's really in your sunscreen?
Most conventional sunscreens rely on chemical UV filters including oxybenzone, octinoxate, homosalate, and avobenzone. These absorb into the bloodstream and have been detected in blood, urine, and breast milk after a single application. Oxybenzone and octinoxate are directly toxic to coral reefs and have been banned in Hawaii, Key West, and Palau.
Mineral sunscreens use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as their active ingredients. These sit on top of the skin and physically deflect UV rays rather than absorbing them, making them a safer option for both your body and the ocean. Reef-safe, non-nano mineral formulas are the standard to look for.

pack for the beach, not the ocean
An estimated 8 million metric tons of plastic enter the ocean every year, much of it from everyday beach use: single-use water bottles, plastic bags, disposable food packaging, and conventional personal care packaging discarded after one use. Microplastics have now been found in ocean water at every depth, in fish tissue, and in human blood.
Sustainable beach essentials are designed to be durable, refillable, or compostable. A reef-safe sunscreen in a recyclable tube, a stainless steel water bottle, and a reusable tote can collectively eliminate hundreds of single-use items across a single summer season.

the real cost of fast fashion swimwear
Over 60% of swimwear is made from synthetic fabrics such as polyester, nylon, and elastane, all derived from fossil fuels. Every wash of a synthetic garment releases an estimated 700,000 microplastic fibres. These fibres are too small to be captured by most water treatment systems and flow directly into rivers, lakes, and oceans, where they are ingested by marine life and enter the food chain.
Sustainable swimwear brands use ECONYL (regenerated nylon from ocean waste and fishing nets), recycled polyester from plastic bottles, and organic cotton blends. Choosing one sustainable swimsuit over a fast fashion piece prevents thousands of microplastics from entering the water with every wash.
