Packaging
The brand has moved away from virgin plastic containers in favor of recyclable or compostable materials. Notably, their new Laundry Soap Powder is packaged in a sealed kraft paper bag (32 oz) instead of a traditional plastic jug. This switch to paper (with minimal printing) makes the packaging readily recyclable or biodegradable, and it significantly reduces plastic waste. In addition, MamaSuds often omits unnecessary components. For instance, the laundry powder’s measuring scoop is optional so that customers can reuse an existing scoop and avoid extra plastic. The brand also offers refillable systems: their All-Purpose Cleaner is sold as a concentrate in a 16 oz bottle that yields eight refills, allowing users to reuse their spray bottles rather than buying a new one each time.
While some packaging components are still plastic (the concentrates and cleaners come in recyclable plastic bottles and certain caps or spray tops are likely plastic), MamaSuds keeps these to a minimum and favors widely recyclable plastics (HDPE/PET) or durable materials like glass where possible. There is no evidence of multi-layer unrecyclable packaging; instead, we see simple, modular packaging (e.g. glass jar with metal lid for a face cream, paper or cardboard for bar soaps and balms) that consumers can easily recycle or repurpose.
Ingredient Sustainability
Across its range, MamaSuds clearly prioritizes ingredients from the most sustainable tiers. The brand avoids petrochemicals, persistent synthetic polymers (no PVA/PVOH microplastics), and environmentally harmful substances. They have phased out problematic ingredients like borax in new formulations and entirely avoid anything linked to deforestation (zero palm oil, zero tropical hardwood ingredients). In cases where an ingredient has inherent sustainability concerns (like frankincense or beeswax), MamaSuds leans on responsible sourcing. THis means choosing farmed sources over wild harvest when possible and verifying quality through organic or local suppliers. The company is transparent about ingredient origins and updates its ingredient sourcing info regularly (they publicly share country of origin and certifications for each ingredient on their site.
Energy Use and Footprint
MamaSuds is a small-scale producer, which inherently keeps its carbon footprint lower than mass-market brands, but the company has not (as of our research) published detailed carbon metrics or a formal emissions reduction plan. MamaSuds shows some efforts to minimize emissions (through concentrates, reduced shipping weight, and local production), but lacks formal transparency or robust carbon initiatives.
Waste Management
Firstly, as discussed in packaging, the brand’s use of refill concentrates and reusable containers greatly cuts down on consumer waste. Each all-purpose cleaner concentrate bottle eliminates the need for 8 disposable plastic spray bottles, and their Laundry Soap Powder in a paper pouch avoids the typical plastic jug waste entirely. By designing products that are multi-purpose and long-lasting, they also reduce waste.
Another aspect is upcycling and ingredient reuse. As noted, using grapeseed oil (a byproduct of another industry) in multiple products is a form of upcycling ingredients. They also sell wool dryer balls and similar reusables, promoting products that replace disposable dryer sheets (this is indirectly waste mitigation by offering a reusable alternative).
Business Model
MamaSuds operates on a slow, sustainable business model that contrasts sharply with the fast-paced, overconsumption-driven strategies of mainstream consumer goods companies. The brand has been around since 2012 and has grown gradually and intentionally. MamaSuds offers a curated range of timeless household staples (laundry soap, all-purpose cleaner, castile soap, basic skincare, etc.) that are always in need. They largely avoid chasing trends or seasonal gimmicks.
