Somewhere along the way, nail polish started being sold by subtraction.
3-free became 5-free became 7-free became 10-free, and now there are bottles on the shelf advertising themselves as 21-free, which raises the obvious question of what exactly was in there to begin with, and the less obvious question of who decided what counts.
The answer to the second one is: nobody. There is no regulator, no standards body, and no agreed list. A brand can call itself 10-free and pick which ten. Two bottles both labeled 10-free may have removed entirely different things.
That does not mean the whole category is a con. Several of the ingredients being removed are worth removing, and the industry has cleaned up meaningfully over the last fifteen years, largely because customers started asking. But if you are going to spend more on non-toxic nail polish, it is worth knowing which parts of the claim are doing real work.
So here is what is actually in a bottle of nail polish, which ingredients have evidence behind the concern, where the real exposure risk sits (it is probably not where you think), and how to choose.

Non-Toxic Nail Polish At A Glance
- The "free-from" numbers are unregulated. Useful as a rough signal, meaningless as a standard, and not comparable between brands.
- There is no such thing as natural or organic nail polish. Polish is a plastic film dissolved in solvent. A brand claiming otherwise is stretching.
- The ingredients with the most evidence behind them: toluene, formaldehyde, dibutyl phthalate, and triphenyl phosphate.
- The biggest exposure risk is occupational, not personal. Salon workers, not people painting their nails at home once a fortnight.
- Gel is the category that changed most recently, with the EU banning a common gel photoinitiator in 2025.
- Water-based polish is the one structurally different option, and the right answer for children.
What Is Actually In Nail Polish?
Worth understanding before the ingredient debates, because it explains why "natural nail polish" is not really a thing.
Nail polish is a plastic film delivered in a solvent. Four components do the work:
Film formers. Usually nitrocellulose, which is what actually hardens into the colored layer on your nail. This is the polish. Everything else is there to get it onto the nail and keep it there.
Solvents. Ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, alcohol. These keep everything liquid in the bottle and evaporate off as it dries. That smell is the solvents leaving.
Plasticizers. These stop the dried film from cracking when your nails flex. Historically this job was done by dibutyl phthalate, which is where a good deal of the concern in this category started.
Pigments, resins, and additives. Color, adhesion, shine, thickeners to stop pigment settling.
There is no version of this that is a plant extract. Some brands use bio-sourced solvents or plant-derived film formers, which is a real improvement in feedstock, but the finished product is still a polymer film. "Organic nail polish" is not a certified category, and anything marketed that way is using the word loosely.
We would rather say that plainly than sell you a story. The useful question is not whether polish is natural. It is which specific ingredients are in it.
The "Free-From" Numbers, Decoded
Here is roughly what each tier removes, with the caveat that brands vary.
3-free removes the original toxic trio: dibutyl phthalate (DBP), toluene, and formaldehyde. This became standard across most of the mainstream industry years ago, so a 3-free claim now tells you very little.
5-free adds formaldehyde resin and camphor.
7-free typically adds triphenyl phosphate (TPHP) and xylene.
10-free varies most. Common additions include parabens, fragrance, animal-derived ingredients, and various solvents.
Beyond 10-free, the numbers become a marketing exercise. Brands start counting ingredients that were never in nail polish, which is a bit like advertising bread as gluten-optional.
What to do with this: treat 5-free as the practical baseline and 7-free or above as a good sign, but read the actual list where a brand provides one. A brand that publishes its full formula is telling you more than one advertising a number.
The Ingredients That Actually Matter
Toluene. A solvent that gives polish smooth application. Inhalation at high concentrations affects the central nervous system, which is why it matters far more for salon workers than for occasional home use. Mostly removed across the industry now.
Formaldehyde and formaldehyde resin. Used as a hardener and in adhesion. Formaldehyde is a recognized carcinogen and a contact allergen, and the resin is a common cause of allergic reactions on the skin around the nail rather than on the nail itself.
Dibutyl phthalate (DBP). The plasticizer that kept polish flexible. Phthalates are endocrine disruptors, and DBP specifically is restricted in cosmetics in the EU. This is the ingredient with the strongest regulatory case against it.
Triphenyl phosphate (TPHP). The replacement plasticizer that arrived after DBP left, which is a pattern worth noticing. In 2015, researchers at Duke University and the Environmental Working Group measured a TPHP metabolite in participants' urine after polish application, with levels rising within hours. It was a small study and it measured exposure rather than harm, but it did establish that the compound gets into the body through nail application. TPHP is an endocrine disruptor of ongoing research interest.
Camphor. Included for gloss. Can cause irritation, and is one of the more common causes of the yellowing associated with heavy polish use.
Xylene. A solvent and another respiratory irritant.
Parabens and synthetic fragrance. Less of an issue in polish than in leave-on skincare, but easy to avoid and frequently included in longer free-from lists.
TPO, Gel Polish, And What Changed In 2025
If you wear gel, this is the part worth reading.
TPO (trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide) is a photoinitiator, the ingredient that makes gel polish cure hard under a UV or LED lamp. In the EU it was reclassified as a substance of concern for reproductive toxicity, and its use in cosmetic products including gel nail systems was prohibited from September 2025. Products containing it had to come off the EU market rather than be sold through.
Two things worth knowing about that. First, it explains why searches for TPO-free polish jumped, and why some brands reformulated quietly. Second, the United States has not followed, so TPO remains legal and present in gel products sold in the US market. If you want to avoid it, you currently have to read labels rather than rely on the regulator.
On UV lamps. A 2023 study from researchers at the University of California San Diego found that radiation from UV nail dryers caused cell death and DNA damage in human and mouse cells in a laboratory setting. It generated a lot of alarming headlines. The honest reading is that it was a cell-culture study rather than a study of people, it does not establish that gel manicures cause cancer, and the epidemiological evidence in humans remains limited. It is a reasonable basis for caution rather than panic. If you want to reduce exposure, fingerless UV-protective gloves or a sunscreen on the hands before curing are simple measures.
The bigger practical issue with gel is removal. Soaking in acetone and scraping causes real thinning and damage to the nail plate over time, and much of what people attribute to the chemistry is actually mechanical. If your nails are suffering, the removal process is the more likely culprit.
Is Nail Polish Actually Dangerous?
Here is the balanced answer, because this category attracts a lot of overstatement in both directions.
For most people, occasional home use is a low-exposure activity. You are applying a small quantity to a keratin surface, in a ventilated room, every week or two. The nail plate itself is not especially permeable, and the solvents evaporate within minutes. The realistic risk profile of that is modest.
The serious exposure risk is occupational. Nail technicians work with these products for eight hours a day, often in rooms with poor ventilation, across years. Research on salon workers has found elevated exposure to solvents and plasticizers and higher rates of respiratory symptoms and skin problems. If there is a public health story in nail products, it belongs to the workforce rather than the customer.
That is worth saying because the conversation is usually framed entirely around individual consumer choice, and the people bearing the real burden do not get mentioned. If you get your nails done professionally, a salon with proper ventilation and staff who use gloves is a meaningful thing to look for.
Where personal caution makes more sense: if you are pregnant, if you paint your nails very frequently, if you have had contact allergic reactions before, or if you are painting a small child's nails. More on that below.
Water-Based Nail Polish
The one option that is structurally different rather than just subtractive.
Instead of dissolving the film former in organic solvents, water-based polish uses water as the carrier. That means dramatically less odor, no harsh solvents evaporating into the room, and a formula that is broadly considered the safest available.
The trade-offs are real. Water-based polish is less durable, chips faster, takes longer to dry, and often peels off in a sheet rather than requiring remover. For adults wanting a manicure that survives a week of dishwashing, that is a real limitation.
For children, the peeling is the feature. No acetone, no scraping, minimal smell, and it comes off in the bath. This is why nearly every dedicated kids' polish brand is water-based.
Kids, Babies, And Pregnancy
This comes up constantly, so let's be specific.
For children, water-based, peelable polish is the sensible choice. The concern with conventional polish and small children is less about the nail and more about behavior: children put their fingers in their mouths, and are more likely to be at nail-height to solvent fumes for the whole application. Look for water-based, fragrance-free, and a brand that states its full ingredient list.
For babies and newborns, our honest answer is not to. There is no product designed for skin and nails that new, the nails are extremely thin, and there is no benefit that offsets even a small unknown. This is one of those cases where the search volume exists but the right answer is a gentle no.
During pregnancy, the standard guidance from most obstetric sources is that occasional nail polish use is considered low risk, with the caveats that you should use a well-ventilated room, avoid formulas containing toluene and phthalates, and be more cautious about frequent salon visits where the ambient exposure is higher. If you are concerned, a 7-free or higher polish and an open window covers most of it. Anything beyond that is a conversation for your midwife or doctor rather than a shopping guide.
What "Vegan," "Cruelty-Free," And "Clean" Mean Here
Cruelty-free means no animal testing. Look for Leaping Bunny or PETA certification rather than the phrase alone, since the phrase is unregulated and self-declared.
Vegan means no animal-derived ingredients. In nail polish this most often concerns guanine, a shimmer ingredient traditionally derived from fish scales, and carmine, a red pigment made from insects. Both have synthetic or mineral alternatives.
Clean means nothing. No definition, no standard, no oversight. Treat it as a design aesthetic rather than a claim.
Non-toxic is also unregulated as a marketing term, which is a slightly awkward thing for us to note in an article with that phrase in the title. What we mean by it, and what we think you should mean by it, is a specific list of excluded ingredients that the brand will show you.

A Swedish mineral beauty brand that scores 8 out of 10 with us, which we classify as Conscious, and the sub-scores are worth looking at because they are uneven in an informative way.
Non-toxicity: 10 out of 10. Full marks, and the strongest part of their case. The brand formulates without parabens, phthalates, sulfates, and formaldehyde-releasers, uses no microplastics, and has committed through ChemSec's No-PFAS Movement to avoiding PFAS entirely. Their mineral foundation is the only makeup product recommended by Asthma Allergy Nordic, which is a meaningful signal about how conservatively they formulate for sensitive and reactive skin.
Social responsibility: 7.3. Certified cruelty-free by both Leaping Bunny and PETA, 99% vegan across the range with the remainder being reformulated, and mica sourced only from suppliers verified not to use child labor. They also fund women's economic development work in Kenya and support Unizon, the Swedish women's shelter network. The gap is a formal supplier code of conduct and published audits, which they have not released.
Sustainability: 5.9, and this is where the honest caveats sit. They have done real work on packaging, with mono-material redesigns, FSC paper compacts replacing plastic ones, and bio-based sugarcane-derived tubes, and they moved manufacturing into Europe to cut transport emissions. But the range still relies heavily on plastic, and they have not published a comprehensive carbon or energy report, made renewable energy commitments, or set greenhouse gas targets beyond the packaging work.
On the nail range specifically, they cover the full manicure: polish from $10, a base coat, a fast-dry top coat, a nail hardener, and a nail oil. Base and top coats matter more than people assume: a proper base coat prevents the staining that leaves nails yellow, and a good top coat is most of what determines whether a manicure lasts four days or nine.
Worth knowing: at $10 to $12 this is priced below most of the clean beauty category, which is unusual and welcome. It is also conventional solvent-based polish rather than water-based, so it is not the choice for young children.

The Rest Of The Manicure
Polish gets the attention, but the tools and the aftercare are where most nail damage actually happens or gets prevented.
A glass nail file does not shred the nail edge the way emery boards do, which reduces peeling and splitting. It also lasts essentially forever and washes clean, unlike disposable boards. Love of Earth Co. makes one.

Reducing Your Exposure Without Giving Up Polish
- Open a window. The solvents evaporate within minutes. Ventilation handles nearly all of the inhalation exposure, and costs nothing.
- Do not paint your nails in a car, a bathroom with the door shut, or in bed. Small enclosed spaces are where concentrations build.
- Use a base coat. It reduces direct contact between pigment and nail plate, and prevents staining.
- Take breaks. A week off between manicures lets the nail rehydrate. Continuous polish for months is what produces the dry, chalky, peeling nails people blame on the polish itself.
- Choose acetone-free remover where you can, and use oil afterward either way. Acetone is effective and is not the villain it is made out to be, but it is severely drying.
- Do not peel gel off. You are removing layers of nail plate with it. Soak properly, or have it removed.
- At the salon, look at the ventilation. For your sake and considerably more for the technician's.
Non-Toxic Nail Polish FAQs
Is nail polish toxic? In normal occasional home use, the exposure is low and the realistic risk is modest. The meaningful concerns are specific ingredients such as toluene, formaldehyde, and phthalates, which most brands have already removed, and occupational exposure for salon workers, which is a much more serious issue than personal use.
What does 10-free nail polish mean? That the brand has excluded ten ingredients it considers objectionable. There is no regulated list, so two 10-free polishes may have excluded different things. Read the actual exclusions rather than the number.
Is there such a thing as organic or natural nail polish? Not really. Nail polish is a plastic film in solvent, and no version of it is a plant product. Some brands use bio-sourced ingredients, which is a real improvement, but "organic nail polish" is not a certified category.

Is nail polish safe during pregnancy? Occasional use is generally considered low risk. Use a ventilated room, choose a formula free of toluene and phthalates, and be more cautious about frequent salon visits. Ask your midwife or doctor if you want advice specific to you.
Can I use nail polish on a toddler? Water-based, peelable polish designed for children is the option to use. Skip conventional polish, and skip it entirely for babies.
Does non-toxic nail polish chip faster? Sometimes, though the gap has narrowed considerably. Removing toluene and formaldehyde resin did affect early formulations, and modern ones perform much better. A quality base and top coat makes more difference to longevity than the free-from tier does.
What about non-toxic nail polish remover? Acetone-free removers are gentler on the skin but slower and less effective, particularly on glitter and dark shades. Either way, follow with cuticle oil. Dehydration causes far more visible nail damage than remover chemistry.
Is "clean" nail polish a real standard? No. It has no definition and no oversight. Look for specific exclusions and certifications instead.
Final Thoughts
The nail polish industry has spent fifteen years competing over which numbers it can put in front of the word "free," and the odd result is that most polish is now meaningfully better than it was in 2010, while the labeling has become less informative rather than more.
What we would actually suggest: pick a brand that publishes its ingredients, aim for 7-free or above, buy a decent base and top coat because they do more for your nails than the polish does, use cuticle oil, open a window, and take breaks.
And if you are painting a small child's nails, buy the water-based stuff and enjoy the fact that it comes off in the bath.
