  • Select refillable packaging

Sustainability

score : 4.5/10

Packaging

Most packaging (glossy black plastic compacts, pumps, etc.) remains non-refillable and may not be easily recyclable through curbside streams. No public take-back program for empties is offered. Overall, Chanel is beginning to integrate circular principles (refills, recycled content) into packaging, but these efforts are not yet uniform across all products. The use of virgin and non-recyclable plastics is substantial.

Ingredient Sustainability

Chanel emphasizes traceability and ethical sourcing for certain high-risk materials: all its cosmetic palm oil derivatives are RSPO-certified sustainable, and it participates in the Responsible Mica Initiative to ensure mica minerals (used for shimmer in makeup) are mined under fair and safe conditions. Despite these initiatives, Chanel’s portfolio still relies on numerous petrochemical-derived synthetics (e.g. silicones, polymers) which, while safe, are not renewable and carry a higher environmental footprint.

Energy Use and Footprint

As a large luxury house, Chanel has set science-based climate targets and made them public. In 2020 it launched the Chanel Mission 1.5° climate action plan, aiming to cut GHG emissions from its own operations by 50% and across its supply chain by 40% by 2030 (vs. 2018). It has since reported steady progress: nearly 97% renewable electricity in operations as of 2022. Still, as a producer of luxury cosmetics, Chanel’s overall footprint includes resource-intensive components (glass, exotic raw materials) and emissions from product use and disposal. There is room to further decarbonize manufacturing and encourage low-impact product use.

Waste Management

The N°1 de Chanel line illustrates waste-conscious design: packaging weight reductions directly lead to less material waste, but this does not extend across the entire product line. In manufacturing, Chanel has not publicly announced zero-waste-to-landfill achievements, but it does mention evaluating the full product life cycle including end-of-life of packaging.

Business Model

Chanel’s luxury business model is traditionally one of exclusive, high-quality products, yet still faces sustainability challenges in sourcing and consumer culture.

Non-toxicity

score : 5.5/10

Many Chanel products do contain “Parfum (Fragrance)”, a composite ingredient which can include potential allergens; indeed, fragrance is present even in products like foundations and lipsticks. On a positive note, Chanel’s La Solution 10 cream was formulated with just 10 ingredients to minimize risk for reactive skin (it is free of fragrance, alcohol, oils and uses soothing silver needle tea extract). Heavy metals are not intentionally added in any formula; only trace amounts could be present as contaminants in mineral pigments, and Chanel, like all reputable brands, must adhere to strict limits on those. In terms of human health, Chanel’s products are generally non-toxic, dermatologically tested, and compliant with EU, US, and Asia safety regulations.

Social Responsibility

score : 4.8/10

In practice, much of Chanel’s beauty manufacturing occurs in developed markets (France, Japan, etc.) with strong labor laws, which reduces risks at the factory level. For raw materials sourced from smaller producers globally, Chanel has programs to uplift standards: it cites a traceability project for shea butter. However, due to its private ownership, Chanel is not the most transparent in publishing audit results or a full list of suppliers, which some evaluators consider for labor ethics. In independent rankings (e.g. Fashion Revolution’s index for labor rights), Chanel tends to score lower on disclosure, even if internally it enforces standards.

Chanel follows EU law banning cosmetic animal testing and states it does not test on animals unless required by law. However, because Chanel sells beauty products in markets like mainland China, it cannot be certified cruelty-free. Indeed, cruelty-free watchdogs confirm Chanel is not a cruelty-free brand, as its products may be subjected to government-mandated animal tests in some regions.

Chanel demonstrates a strong commitment to community engagement and social impact, particularly focusing on women’s empowerment and climate resilience. Through Fondation CHANEL, the company has invested substantially in initiatives that benefit communities around the world.
