Packaging
Packaging is the whole point of this brand, and it is where Cleancult does its most convincing work. Every liquid product is sold either as a filled aluminium bottle or as a gable top paper carton refill, with laundry and toilet sheets in a plain paperboard drawer box. Cleancult was the first company to solve the engineering problem of holding liquid soap in a milk style carton without leaking, and the aluminium bottles are built to be refilled indefinitely rather than replaced. Aluminium recycles endlessly with no loss of quality, and the brand puts the reduction at roughly 90 percent less plastic than a conventional bottled equivalent.
The carton is where the claim gets softer than the marketing suggests. A gable top carton is paperboard bonded to a thin polyethylene liner, with a plastic screw cap and spout, so it is recyclable only where carton recycling exists locally, and that infrastructure is patchy across much of the United States and largely absent outside it. Cleancult carries How2Recycle labelling, which helps people sort correctly, but we could not confirm FSC certification for the paperboard, and there is no compostable, home compostable or dissolvable option anywhere in the range. The refill still leaves a piece of packaging behind every time.
Ingredient Sustainability
Cleancult builds nearly every formula on coconut derived surfactants, including sodium coco-sulfate, coco-glucoside, potassium cocoate, decyl glucoside and cocamidopropyl betaine. Coconut can be one of the gentler oil crops when it is grown in mixed smallholder systems where the husk, water and shell are all used. Grown as plantation monoculture it does the opposite, stripping soil nutrients and displacing the surrounding ecosystem. Because so much of the line rests on this single crop, the absence of any organic, Fair Trade or supplier level verification for it is the most consequential gap in this section. The company funded early scientific research into coconut chemistry, so the technical interest is real, but the sourcing story is not published.
The ingredient lists show these scents are built from fragrance compounds such as geraniol, coumarin, linalool, eugenol and benzyl salicylate rather than from the botanical extracts themselves, so no pressure lands on those species. The trade off is that the fragrance composition is otherwise undisclosed.
Two petrochemical inputs sit awkwardly against the promise of formulas made without petroleum based ingredients. Laureth-7 appears in the liquid laundry detergent, the dish soap, the surface cleaner and the laundry sheets. It is produced by ethoxylation using petroleum derived ethylene oxide, breaks down only partially, and is toxic to aquatic life. The laundry and toilet sheets are held together with polyvinyl alcohol, a petroleum derived film whose real world breakdown in wastewater treatment is still contested and which several researchers treat as a microplastic pathway.
The preservative choice does the most damage here. The liquid laundry detergent, the dish soap and the surface cleaner are all preserved with methylisothiazolinone and benzisothiazolinone. Methylisothiazolinone is among the most acutely toxic ingredients to aquatic organisms in common commercial use, and benzisothiazolinone is persistent and slow to biodegrade. These are rinse off products, so effectively all of it goes down the drain and into waterways.
Energy Use and Carbon Footprint
Production happens in the United States with a research team based in San Juan, Puerto Rico, which keeps freight distances short compared with brands importing finished liquids. Concentration is the strongest lever Cleancult pulls: a 32 ounce carton covers 64 loads of laundry, and the sheets remove the water entirely, so the shipped mass per use is a fraction of a conventional detergent jug.
Disclosure has not kept pace with that. Cleancult previously offset shipping emissions through Carbonfund.org and reported roughly 1,200 tonnes offset by 2021, but that work no longer appears in current communications. There is no published emissions inventory, no breakdown by scope, no renewable energy commitment for manufacturing, no third party verification and no science based reduction target. What we can credit is design that lowers transport emissions by default. What we cannot credit is measurement, because none has been made public.
Waste Management
Refilling is not a side collection at Cleancult, it applies across the entire portfolio, which is rare at this scale and in mass market retail. The aluminium bottle is bought once and kept, the sheets and tablets strip packaging back further, and the wool dryer balls replace a disposable product for up to a thousand loads. Plastic Neutral certification through rePurpose Global funds the recovery of an amount of plastic waste equivalent to the brand footprint, which is a meaningful commitment even though it offsets rather than eliminates.
What holds this back from the top band is that the loop never fully closes. Each refill is still a single use carton that gets thrown away, there is no bottle take back or buyback programme, upcycled or byproduct inputs are limited to the citrus peel oils, and the company publishes no figures on manufacturing waste diversion. A fully circular version of this system would return the container rather than recycle it.
Business Model
Cleaning products are consumables, so repeat purchase is unavoidable, and Cleancult handles the durable part of that well by selling the bottle once and the contents forever. The marketing argues for using less plastic rather than buying more things, which is unusual and worth acknowledging.
Working against it is the pace of expansion. The range now runs to roughly 60 items, new scents and formats arrive frequently to feed shelf space at Target, Walmart and Costco, and the retail model comes with the usual promotional pricing, free shipping thresholds and multipack discounting.
