Sustainability

score : 6.3/10

Packaging

Dr. Hauschka builds most of its skin care packaging from glass and aluminium, two materials the company describes as permanent because they can be recycled repeatedly without loss of quality. Its amber glass jars now contain about 52 percent recycled glass, and these jars are moving to lids made from 95 percent post-consumer recycled plastic.

Water-based creams are filled into aluminium tubes, chosen for their barrier protection in a range that uses no synthetic preservatives. Folding cartons are made entirely from recycled paper rather than virgin fibre, printed with mineral-oil-free inks derived from renewable raw materials, and the paper inserts carry the Blue Angel ecolabel.

The brand has reduced package inserts to save an estimated 10 tonnes of paper a year and raised recycled content across its pumps

There is no refill or reuse system anywhere.

Ingredient Sustainability

Dr. Hauschka sources more than 90 percent of its plant raw materials from controlled organic cultivation, with biodynamic (Demeter) quality wherever possible, and grows many medicinal herbs in WALA's own biodynamic garden.

About 70 percent of its fresh plants are grown regionally, which shortens transport distances and the associated footprint. Where an ingredient cannot be obtained in organic quality on the world market, the company sets up its own cultivation projects rather than buying conventional stock, a pattern seen with rose oil, mango butter, castor oil and shea butter.

What distinguishes the brand environmentally is how it handles the botanicals that are usually red flags for sustainability. Damask rose (Rosa damascena), which recurs across the range as oil, water, extract and wax, is one of the most resource-heavy ingredients in cosmetics, since roughly one hectare of roses yields a single kilogramme of oil. Rather than buying from conventional intensive growers, Dr. Hauschka helped establish biodynamic rose farms in Ethiopia and Iran, both run on Demeter principles and, in Ethiopia, certified to the Fair for Life standard.

Some residual concerns remain. Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens) and ylang ylang (Cananga odorata), both of which appear in the make-up and body range, are land and water intensive and difficult to produce at scale without monoculture pressure, and argan, used in some lip products, carries overharvesting risk in its native range.

Energy Use and Carbon Footprint

WALA's head office and production site in Eckwalden, Germany has operated as a climate-neutral site since 2020.

The company has bought 100 percent certified green electricity for many years, generates energy from biogas made from waste materials, and uses heat recovery and ground-temperature systems for climate control, with around 92 percent of its total energy demand met by renewables.

It reports preventing roughly 1,800 tonnes of CO2 emissions a year, offsets unavoidable emissions such as business travel through the non-profit atmosfair (which funds a biomass plant in India), and reduces transport emissions by sourcing about 70 percent of its fresh plants regionally.

The company is candid that its climate neutrality currently applies to the Eckwalden site rather than the entire value chain, and states that bringing emissions across the whole chain down to near zero is still a work in progress.

Waste Management

Dr. Hauschka works in what it calls material cycles. Plant waste from production is composted, rainwater is captured and used, and packaging decisions are weighed for material savings and recycled content. The reduction of paper inserts alone saves an estimated 10 tonnes of paper a year. These are resource-efficiency measures.

What is missing is the circular infrastructure that defines the strongest performers in this area. There is no refill programme, no buyback or container-return scheme, and no prominent use of upcycled ingredients or multi-purpose product design.

Business Model

Dr. Hauschka is a heritage brand whose core formulations have changed little in decades, and its catalogue of roughly 160 to 170 products is built around evergreen skin care rather than fast-moving trends. The company's holistic philosophy frames skin care as a considered daily ritual rather than impulse consumption, and its foundation ownership removes the pressure to maximise sales for outside shareholders. These features point toward slow, intentional consumption.

But, the catalogue is fairly large, the make-up range introduces seasonal colour and periodic new launches, and the company runs promotional gift-with-purchase offers. The overall direction strongly favours longevity and quality over churn, with some conventional promotional activity at the edges.

Non-toxicity

score : 5.5/10

As a NATRUE-certified range, the products exclude the ingredient groups most often flagged for human health concern: there are no parabens or formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, no phthalates, no PEGs, no silicones, no mineral oils, no sulfates such as SLS, and no synthetic fragrance or dyes. Preservation is achieved through essential oils, plant alcohol, low levels of benzyl alcohol and zinc sulfate, all of which sit at the low end of the hazard scale. Colour in the make-up comes from mineral pigments such as iron oxides, titanium dioxide and mica rather than azo dyes, and full ingredient lists are published for every product.

The one meaningful consideration for sensitive users is the brand's heavy reliance on essential oils for fragrance. The products consistently declare the fragrance allergens citronellol, geraniol, linalool, limonene, citral, farnesol and eugenol, which occur in those essential oils. These are not hazardous in the way that endocrine-disrupting or carcinogenic synthetics are, but they are recognised contact allergens that can trigger irritation or sensitisation in people prone to fragrance allergy, and the formulations are scented throughout.

Some products also contain plant-derived alcohol, which can feel drying for very sensitive skin. With those caveats, the range is clean and low-hazard, and the only barrier to a higher score is the fragrance-allergen load rather than any hazardous chemistry.

Social Responsibility

score : 7.5/10

Fair Labor

Dr. Hauschka is produced by WALA Heilmittel GmbH, a company owned by the WALA Foundation under a steward-ownership model since 1986. The foundation holds 100 percent of the shares, the company cannot be sold or inherited, and profits are either reinvested in the business or distributed to its roughly 1,000 employees through profit-linked bonus schemes.

As a German employer the company operates under strong statutory labour protections, publishes a Code of Conduct, and provides benefits such as subsidised public transport and company bicycles. In its supply chain, WALA's cultivation partnerships are built around decent working conditions, fair wages, interest-free loans and long-term purchase guarantees, and it pays above-market prices for materials such as shea butter. The Ethiopian rose project is certified to the Fair for Life fair-trade standard.

Community Engagement

Through its raw-material subsidiary, WALA initiates and funds organic and biodynamic cultivation projects around the world, and the structure of these projects goes well beyond charitable donation.

In Burkina Faso, a fair-trade and organic shea project now supports more than 4,000 women, paying above-average prices, guaranteeing purchases and helping the villages obtain organic certification through financial, advisory and organisational support.

In Iran, profits from a biodynamic rose project are directed to orphans through a foundation, and in South Africa a long-standing supplier modelled an employee-ownership trust on WALA's own foundation structure.

Animal Welfare

Dr. Hauschka is certified cruelty-free and appears on PETA's Beauty Without Bunnies list. The company states that neither it nor anyone acting on its behalf tests on animals, and it does not sell through channels that would trigger mandatory animal testing, including mainland China retail. That places it well on the testing dimension.

The limiting factor is that the brand is not vegan. Several products in the reviewed sample contain animal-derived ingredients, including beeswax in the Rose Day Cream and beeswax, lanolin and carmine in the lipstick.
