Packaging

In 2023, the brand redesigned its deodorant packaging to a 100% recyclable polypropylene container with 50% post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic. EMJ also introduced refillable pouches for products like body wash in 2023, cutting plastic usage by offering bulk refills. Still, the brand relies heavily on virgin plastic for packaging needs.

All paper and cardboard packaging has been transitioned to certified sustainable sources (FSC/SFI).

Ingredient Sustainability

Most EMJ ingredients are biodegradable (coconut surfactants, plant oils, botanical extracts) and renewably sourced (plant-derived versus petro-derived). Some ingredients (conditioning polymers, some preservatives) are synthetic, but they are used judiciously and chosen for safety (e.g. phenoxyethanol, a low-toxicity preservative, in place of parabens).

Potential palm oil derivatives are present (stearic acid, cetyl alcohol, etc.), and while they reduce petrochemicals, the brand hasn't publicly confirmed use of RSPO-certified palm.

Energy Use and Footprint

The company does not yet claim to be carbon-neutral, but it is actively working to measure and reduce emissions across its supply chain. In 2024, EMJ partnered with the National Forest Foundation to plant 25,000 trees as a means of carbon offset. On the operations and logistics side, EMJ has begun mapping CO₂ emissions across its freight network in partnership with CH Robinson.

Internally, as part of B Corp certification, EMJ committed to aggressive reductions in energy and water use. They are working with their manufacturing and supplier network to achieve year-over-year cuts in electricity consumption and solid waste generation. Transparency around carbon is improving: EMJ published its first Impact Report in 2024.

Notably, EMJ products contain no parabens, phthalates, formaldehyde or formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, BHT, PEGs (ethylene oxide ethoxylates), ethanolamines (like DEA/TEA), SLS/SLES sulfates, or PFAS “forever chemicals.” Instead of harsher chemicals, EMJ opts for safer synthetics when needed. Examples include the preservative system: EMJ uses phenoxyethanol and ethylhexylglycerin, which in low concentrations are considered among the safest broad-spectrum preservatives. They also sometimes use potassium sorbate and sodium benzoate as mild preservatives.

EMJ discloses fragrance allergens (like linalool, limonene) on their ingredient lists. EMJ avoids high-risk fragrance ingredients; for instance, they have phased out Butylphenyl Methylpropional (Lilial), a fragrance ingredient that was present in older formulas.

It's also notable that EMJ has several products that earned EWG's lowest hazard scores (1-2), which is an external validation of their non-toxicity.
