Packaging

In 2023, the brand redesigned its deodorant packaging to a 100% recyclable polypropylene container with 50% post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic. EMJ also introduced refillable pouches for products like body wash in 2023, cutting plastic usage by offering bulk refills. Still, the brand relies heavily on virgin plastic for packaging needs.

Ingredient Sustainability

Most EMJ ingredients are biodegradable (coconut surfactants, plant oils, botanical extracts) and renewably sourced (plant-derived versus petro-derived). Some ingredients (conditioning polymers, some preservatives) are synthetic, but they are used judiciously and chosen for safety (e.g. phenoxyethanol, a low-toxicity preservative, in place of parabens).

Potential palm oil derivatives are present (stearic acid, cetyl alcohol, etc.), and while they reduce petrochemicals, the brand hasn't publicly confirmed use of RSPO-certified palm.

Energy Use and Footprint

The company does not yet claim to be carbon-neutral, but it is actively working to measure and reduce emissions across its supply chain. In 2024, EMJ partnered with the National Forest Foundation to plant 25,000 trees as a means of carbon offset. Examples include the preservative system: EMJ uses phenoxyethanol and ethylhexylglycerin, which in low concentrations are considered among the safest broad-spectrum preservatives. They also sometimes use potassium sorbate and sodium benzoate as mild preservatives.

EMJ discloses fragrance allergens (like linalool, limonene) on their ingredient lists. EMJ avoids high-risk fragrance ingredients; for instance, they have phased out Butylphenyl Methylpropional (Lilial), a fragrance ingredient that was present in older formulas.
