Sustainability

score : 8.3/10

Packaging

The primary product delivery is via refill pouches and reusable containers rather than single-use packaging. Customers either refill their own containers at home or at one of 70+ refill stations nationwide. When mailed, orders are shipped plastic-free, using compostable cardboard boxes and recyclable paper tape/fillers. The refill pouches themselves are recyclable and are collected back by Fillaree for washing and reusing in future production runs. According to the brand, each returned pouch eliminates the need for about 40 new plastic bottles. Even labels and stickers are chosen to be fully recyclable. Fillaree has also eliminated virtually all virgin plastic from its packaging: its standard soap is sold in aluminum bottles, and bulk refills use recyclable plastic which is ideally recirculated in the system.

Ingredient Sustainability

Fillaree’s product formulations rely predominantly on renewable, plant-based ingredients. The soaps and cleaners are made from saponified organic vegetable oils (coconut, sunflower, castor) and naturally derived surfactants, with no petroleum-based solvents or petrochemical surfactants in the main formulas. Importantly, the brand avoids ingredients with known sustainability issues: no palm oil is used (avoiding deforestation impacts), and no endangered botanical extracts appear in its ingredient lists. In fact, many ingredients are certified organic or sourced through ethical supply chains. Notably, Fillaree’s partnership with Sanoun (Mali) ensures their shea butter is not only high quality but also produced via fair-trade, community-supporting methods. This reflects a commitment to sustainable sourcing that benefits producer communities.

For synthetic inputs (like preservatives or surfactant boosters), the brand uses them sparingly and opts for readily biodegradable or low-toxicity options whenever possible. All products are also biodegradable and greywater-safe, meaning they break down without harmful residue in the environment. Overall, Fillaree demonstrates strong transparency about its ingredients, publishing full ingredient lists and even blogging about the origin of key materials (e.g. shea butter)

Energy & Footprint

As a small batch manufacturer, Fillaree operates a single facility in Durham, NC, which inherently keeps its footprint localized. The company’s sustainability efforts have focused more on materials and waste reduction than on explicit energy or carbon initiatives; no public data on energy sourcing or GHG emissions is available. However, some aspects of Fillaree’s model inherently reduce carbon impact. For example, enabling refills at home and locally cuts down on the need for frequent shipping of heavy water-based products (customers can buy in bulk and refill rather than ordering multiple smaller bottles). Fillaree also partners with local waste recovery services (Gather Green in Durham) to handle recycling and reuse, which implies short transport distances for waste and recycling streams. Despite these positives, Fillaree has not quantified its carbon footprint or announced renewable energy use at its facility.

Waste Management

In production, they reuse packaging and containers whenever possible and carefully sort materials for recycling or compost. Fillaree conducts an annual “Trash Audit” to quantify any waste produced and identify further reduction opportunities. Impressively, in 2019 Fillaree generated only 8 pounds of landfill trash for the entire year, having diverted 3,617 lbs through recycling or reuse (a 98% diversion rate). Each year since, they have maintained diversion rates around 99%, effectively operating as a near-zero-waste business. The brand also helps customers reduce waste: besides the refill pouch return program, Fillaree’s shipping materials are all compostable or recyclable, so customer-facing waste is minimal.

Business Model

Fillaree’s business model is fundamentally built around sustainability and reuse, rather than the traditional drive for endless consumption. The brand sells products designed to last (e.g. durable refillable bottles, concentrated bulk soap) and encourages customers to buy less packaging over time. This is evident in the subscription refill service. Fillaree would rather customers refill existing bottles than purchase new ones. The product line is relatively small and “evergreen,” focusing on daily essentials (soaps, cleaners, shampoo, etc.) that are consistently needed, as opposed to chasing fast-moving trends or seasonal gimmicks. By avoiding constant new product drops and deep discount sales tactics, Fillaree does not encourage frivolous overconsumption. Instead, it promotes a “reuse culture.” For instance, offering loyalty rewards for returning refill pouches and providing discounts for refill subscriptions.

Non-toxicity

score : 7.0/10

Across the board, Fillaree’s products contain no Category 4 “high concern” chemicals (such as formaldehyde releasers, phthalates, parabens, etc.). A few ingredients could be considered Category 3 (moderate concern) on the Shifting Gaia Toxicity Index: for instance, phenoxyethanol (a preservative with some potential irritation and toxicity concerns at high exposures) and sodium borate (borax) (a naturally derived cleaner that can be harmful if ingested or in concentrated contact). However, these appear in limited contexts and low concentrations that are deemed acceptable by green chemistry standards.

The use of essential oils for fragrance (instead of synthetic fragrance compounds) further ensures the formulas avoid allergens like phthalates. In summary, Fillaree achieves a very high level of ingredient safety, with only a couple of mild preservatives and traditional cleaners (like borax) as the notable “synthetics” in otherwise plant-based recipes.

Social Responsibility

score : 8.5/10

Fair Labor

Fillaree is a small, local manufacturer with a strong ethical foundation, and there is no evidence of labor abuses in its operations or supply chain. The company’s production is done in-house in Durham, NC, where labor laws and workplace safety regulations protect workers. As a proudly women-owned and women-led business, Fillaree demonstrates a commitment to inclusion and equality in its workforce. Beyond its own staff, Fillaree shows concern for fair labor in sourcing. The brand’s partnership for shea butter is explicitly with a fair-trade enterprise in Mali that empowers women producers. Many of Fillaree’s key raw materials (like coconut oil, cocoa butter, etc.) are organic, which often correlates with better farming practices.

Animal Welfare

Fillaree’s entire product line is 100% vegan and cruelty-free. This means Fillaree uses no animal-derived ingredients (no beeswax, tallow, lanolin, etc., aside from locally sold third-party items like a honey product which are separate from Fillaree’s own line), and it ensures that neither the formulas nor ingredients are tested on animals at any stage.

Community Engagement

As a Durham-based business, Fillaree actively contributes to both its local community and the broader sustainable consumer community. Locally, Fillaree hosts events and workshops at its storefront (for instance, DIY sustainability classes and celebrations). It has become a hub for eco-conscious locals, often highlighting other local artisans and brands in-store. Fillaree also engages customers in its sustainability efforts, effectively turning them into a “refiller community” or “waste warriors” as the brand affectionately says. Through its refillers reward club and educational blog posts, Fillaree empowers people to live with less waste and celebrates their collective impact (for instance, publishing the annual waste diversion results as a community achievement). On a broader social scale, Fillaree’s sourcing collaboration in West Africa has a community development angle (supporting women’s communities in Mali). The company also contributes in-kind to local charitable efforts: their waste audits involve donating useful materials to organizations like Habitat for Humanity ReStore and the Durham Scrap Exchange (a creative reuse nonprofit).
