Overview:

Sustainability 5.3/10

La Prairie is a Swiss luxury skincare brand specializing in premium anti-aging treatments and high-end formulations.

Highlights

  • Sustainably farmed caviar
  • Supplier conduct standards
  • Reduced material intensity

Sustainability

score : 5.3/10

Packaging

La Prairie has implemented eco-design principles to lighten and simplify its packaging. For example, the latest Skin Caviar cream packaging uses less material, avoids multi-layered mixed-media components (like metal-plastic laminates), and incorporates some recycled glass to improve recyclability. These initiatives demonstrate meaningful progress in waste reduction and circularity, although it appears such innovations (like refills) currently apply only to a subset of La Prairie’s product lines. The brand still relies heavily on single-use and virgin plastics.

Ingredient Sustainability

A signature ingredient, caviar extract, is now 100% obtained from sustainably farmed sturgeon in Switzerland; in fact, La Prairie co-developed a responsible aquaculture standard with the World Sturgeon Conservation Society to govern its caviar supply. La Prairie also claims to “blacklist” certain problematic or unsustainable ingredients across its supply chain, but specific blacklisted substances are not publicly detailed.

Several La Prairie formulas also include cyclic silicone compounds such as cyclopentasiloxane (D5) and cyclohexasiloxane (D6) as texture enhancers (common in silky serum or foundation bases). While non-toxic to humans upon topical use, these silicones are persistent in the environment and bioaccumulative. Additionally, some polymeric thickeners and texture agents (e.g. Polymethyl Methacrylate microbeads and other methacrylate crosspolymers in the foundation) are essentially microplastics that do not biodegrade readily.

Energy Use and Footprint

There is no indication that La Prairie itself is carbon-neutral or using on-site renewable energy at its production sites yet, only that it is moving in that direction under corporate sustainability programs. In Switzerland (where La Prairie is headquartered and some production occurs), manufacturing likely taps into relatively clean energy grids, but global distribution and retail operations still contribute to its footprint.

Waste Management

Overall, the company is actively addressing waste through smarter packaging and recycling efforts, but given the luxurious (and often elaborate) nature of its products, excess waste remains a serious concern.

Business Model

La Prairie’s business model as a luxury skincare house is being gradually infused with sustainability principles, even as it continues to sell exclusive, high-priced products. Still, the traditional model contributes greatly to overconsumption.

Non-toxicity

score : 4.0/10

La Prairie does avoid certain outright banned or highly hazardous substances. For instance, there are no reports of it using formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, triclosan, or coal-tar dyes. Many of its recent skincare formulations are also free of phthalates and sulfate detergents, relying on gentler alternatives. Fragrance is used in almost all products, which, while part of the luxurious sensorial experience, introduces potential allergens like limonene and linalool (both listed in ingredient disclosures) that can irritate sensitive individuals.

Social Responsibility

score : 3.3/10

The company has a comprehensive Supplier Code of Conduct that all business partners must sign and follow, which explicitly forbids forced or compulsory labor, child labor, discrimination, and exploitative practices. This Code also covers fair working conditions, wages, and hours in line with international labor norms. La Prairie conducts due diligence on suppliers via third-party platforms.

On the policy level, the company asserts that it does not test products or ingredients on animals and does not outsource animal testing to third parties. La Prairie products are sold in regions such as Mainland China that, until recently, mandated animal tests for certain imported cosmetics. This means that in those cases, the brand’s products have been subjected to animal testing by authorities.
