Sustainability

Packaging

LYS Beauty sits in the middle of the field on packaging. The brand uses FSC-certified folding cartons for its secondary packaging, which supports responsibly managed forestry, and several of its primary components incorporate post-consumer recycled (PCR) content. The brand states that its glass and tube packaging is made using 30 percent PCR materials, which lowers demand for virgin plastic and gives waste plastic a second life.

That said, the formulas in the representative sample are predominantly stick and tube products housed in rigid plastic with mixed components such as twist mechanisms, caps, and doe-foot or sponge applicators. These multi-material formats are difficult to recycle through standard curbside systems because the parts are small and made of different materials that are not easily separated. PCR content at 30 percent is a meaningful step but stops well short of fully recycled or refillable construction, and the brand does not currently offer compostable or plastic-free alternatives, refill pods, or a closed-loop container system. There is also no third-party verification of soy or vegetable-based inks on the cartons.

Ingredient Sustainability

The bulk of their product formulas is built on petroleum-derived and synthetic emollients, waxes, and film formers, including ethylhexyl palmitate, isononyl isononanoate, diisostearyl malate, synthetic wax, ceresin (a refined hydrocarbon wax), and polyisobutene. These are effective and stable, but they are fossil-derived inputs with a higher carbon footprint than plant-based alternatives and they are not biodegradable. The color products also rely on mica, a mineral whose supply chain carries well-documented environmental and extraction concerns, with no sourcing transparency provided.

Layered on top of these bases is a consistent set of plant-derived actives: green tea leaf extract, safflower seed oil, sunflower seed oil, watermelon fruit extract, rosehip seed oil, avocado oil, and an AHA fruit blend of bilberry, sugar cane, orange, lemon, and sugar maple in the primer.

Several of these are encouraging from a sustainability standpoint. Rosehip and safflower are hardy, low-input crops, and watermelon and several of the fruit extracts are byproducts of the food industry, which reduces waste.

Others warrant closer scrutiny that the brand does not currently address. Avocado oil is linked to deforestation and heavy water use in major growing regions, sunflower and safflower are frequently grown as monocultures with significant pesticide inputs, and the brand provides no organic, Fair Trade, regenerative, or other certifications, nor any country-of-origin or farming-practice transparency for any botanical input.

The core issue is not the presence of any single high-risk botanical but the absence of sourcing transparency across the board, combined with formulas that lean heavily on fossil-derived synthetics.

Energy Use and Carbon Footprint

This is the weakest area of the evaluation. LYS Beauty does not publish any greenhouse gas emissions data, does not report on the energy sources powering its manufacturing or operations, and makes no public commitments to renewable energy, carbon neutrality, or emissions reduction. Production is handled through third-party contract manufacturers that are not disclosed, which removes visibility into the energy intensity of the supply chain.

Waste Management

LYS Beauty's strongest sustainability contribution is its involvement with a beauty-industry packaging take-back program, which it helped establish to collect hard-to-recycle cosmetic packaging that standard curbside systems cannot process. Through this program, consumers can drop off or mail back empty beauty packaging across brands, diverting material that would otherwise reach landfill or incineration. This is an ongoing waste-diversion effort rather than a one-off gesture, and as a relatively small brand the company's absolute waste output is comparatively modest.

Where the brand falls short is in designing waste out at the source. There are no refill or buyback programs, products are largely single-format rather than multi-purpose, and the line does not incorporate upcycled ingredients or repurposed industry byproducts in a systematic way.

Business Model

LYS Beauty balances elements of mindful and conventional retail. On the positive side, the core complexion range is evergreen and solution-oriented rather than trend-chasing, the products are designed with skincare benefits intended to be used up over time, and the under-thirty-dollar pricing is framed around accessibility rather than disposability. The brand's messaging centers self-acceptance rather than the constant pursuit of newness.

At the same time, this is a fast-growing, venture-backed color cosmetics brand operating in a category built on frequent launches, seasonal shades, viral product moments, and regular promotional activity, including subscribe-and-save discounting and heavy social-commerce selling.

Non-toxicity

score : 7.0/10

Assessed against the same five-product sample, and focused here strictly on human health rather than environmental impact, LYS Beauty performs well.

Every product is formulated to the Sephora Clean and Credo Clean standards, the latter of which screens out more than 2,700 questionable ingredients.

Across the sample we found no parabens, no phthalates, no formaldehyde or formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, no SLS or SLES sulfates, no oxybenzone, no hydroquinone, no coal tar, no triclosan, and no mineral oil. Talc is excluded brand-wide, and synthetic fragrance is either absent or kept below one percent, which removes one of the most common sources of irritation and undisclosed allergens in cosmetics.

The bulk of each formula consists of low-hazard emollients, mineral colorants such as iron oxides and titanium dioxide, and skin-supportive actives including niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, panthenol, vitamin E, and soothing botanical extracts like green tea, chamomile, gotu kola, licorice, and ashwagandha. These carry low toxicity profiles and several offer skin benefits. The formulas are preserved with phenoxyethanol and caprylyl glycol, which are widely accepted, gentle, modern preservatives used within safe limits.

A few details keep this short of the very top of the range.

Several color products use synthetic dyes such as Red 40 Lake, and certain blush shades contain additional synthetic colorants including Red 27 and tartrazine, which can trigger sensitivity in a minority of users.

The skin tint and some other items contain phenoxyethanol alongside trace synthetic pigments, and the brand does not yet hold deeper safety certifications such as MADE SAFE or EWG Verified that would evidence reformulation beyond clean-standard compliance.

Social Responsibility

score : 5.3/10

Fair Labor

LYS Beauty is a small, US-based, founder-led company, and smaller operations of this kind tend to carry lower labor risk than large multinational manufacturers. The brand has shown care for its own team, including company-wide gestures such as a staff appreciation trip, and the founder has spoken openly about building an inclusive workplace and advocating for other Black- and minority-owned businesses. Ownership sits with the founder, who retains a majority stake alongside minority investment from a consumer-focused private equity firm and an earlier investor.

The gap is supply-chain transparency. Products are made by undisclosed third-party contract manufacturers, and the brand does not publish supplier labor policies, factory locations, audit results, or recognized labor certifications such as Fair Trade, SA8000, or membership in programs like the Ethical Trading Initiative.

Community Engagement

The program centers on charitable donations, nonprofit partnerships, and engagement with underrepresented communities, with named partners including a breast cancer awareness organization and a nonprofit that supports young women of color through mentorship and professional development. The brand's broader mission around representation and self-confidence aligns these efforts with its core operations rather than treating them as a side initiative.

What holds the score at a moderate level is the absence of detailed, measurable impact reporting.

Animal Welfare

Animal welfare is a clear strength. LYS Beauty is certified cruelty-free by both Leaping Bunny, which requires supplier monitoring and independent audit commitments, and PETA's program, and the entire line is 100 percent vegan with no animal-derived ingredients. The brand confirms that neither it nor its suppliers test on animals, and it does not sell through retail channels in mainland China or other markets that could mandate animal testing, which closes the most common loophole in cruelty-free claims.

The brand reaches the high tier rather than the very top because its leadership here is at the product and certification level rather than the advocacy level.
