Packaging
YSL Beauty has made refill systems a centerpiece of its packaging strategy, and this is the strongest part of its environmental footprint at the shelf. Its most recognizable fragrances, including Libre, Y, and MYSLF, have been re-engineered to accept large refills, and the brand reports cutting glass, metal, and plastic use substantially when a refill replaces repeat full-price bottles.
Refillable formats now extend across skincare icons such as the Or Rouge cream and several Pure Shots serums, with the brand citing material reductions of up to 92 percent on some refill pods.
Lipstick bullets, mascaras, cushion compacts, and fragrance caps still rely on mixed plastics, metals, and magnetic closures that are difficult to separate and recycle, and heavyweight secondary packaging persists across gifting and holiday sets. Compostable or bio-based materials remain marginal, post-consumer recycled content is partial rather than standard, and the inks and coatings used are not third-party verified.
Ingredient Sustainability
On the plant-derived side, YSL Beauty has built one of the more credible sourcing stories in prestige beauty. Its Ourika Community Gardens in the Moroccan Atlas grow and hand-harvest signature botanicals such as pomegranate, marshmallow, walnut, iris, jasmine, and saffron using organic practices, and the Rewild Our Earth program commits to protecting and restoring land across Morocco, Madagascar, Haiti, and Indonesia where the brand sources material.
This matters because several of the botanicals in the range are inherently demanding. Saffron, jasmine, and iris are among the most resource-intensive plant ingredients in cosmetics; geranium, which the brand links to Madagascar, is associated with soil and water pressure under monoculture; and shea butter, which appears in the Pure Shots cream, carries overharvesting risk when demand outpaces tree regeneration. Cultivating these in managed, biodiversity-focused systems rather than wild-harvesting them is the right approach and lifts the sustainability profile of the botanical fraction. Mica, used for shimmer in the makeup, remains a watch-item.
The limiting factor is the formulation base itself, which is heavily synthetic and petroleum-derived. Across the sample we found pervasive silicones and, most significantly for the environment, plastic-class polymers such as polyethylene, nylon-12, and styrene/acrylates copolymer that contribute to microplastic pollution and do not biodegrade. L’Oréal’s group-level commitment to reach 95 percent bio-based, mineral-derived, or circular ingredients by 2030 is a strong directional signal, and the brand’s botanical sourcing is transparent and well-documented, but the current formulas still lean on a substantial unsustainable-synthetic load.
Energy Use and Carbon Footprint
Carbon and energy are the brand’s strongest area, carried by L’Oréal’s group infrastructure. The parent’s decarbonization trajectory was validated by the Science Based Targets initiative in 2024, with a commitment to a major absolute reduction in emissions across all scopes by 2030 and net zero by 2050.
The overwhelming majority of L’Oréal’s industrial sites now run on renewable electricity, with the company reporting figures in the high-seventies to high-nineties percent range and a roughly 74 percent cut in industrial emissions, and YSL’s French production sites are reported as carbon neutral.
The group favors sea freight over air, runs life-cycle analysis on products through its internal SPOT tool, and reports to the CDP.
However, L’Oréal’s total footprint has grown rather than shrunk in recent years, largely because of acquisitions, and the hardest emissions sit in the value chain (raw materials, consumer use, and transport) rather than in the factories where the renewable-energy wins are concentrated.
Waste Management
The same refill architecture that helps the packaging score is the main driver here, and refills are weighted heavily in any serious circularity assessment.
By making its fragrance and skincare icons refillable rather than offering refills as a token option, the brand reduces repeat packaging waste at scale, and the TerraCycle partnership adds an end-of-life recovery route for empties. Removing leaflets and redesigning components to use less material are further resource-efficiency gains.
What holds it back from the highest tier is the absence of broader circular practices. There is no buyback scheme, little use of upcycled or repurposed ingredients, and refills do not yet extend comprehensively across the makeup lines.
Business Model
YSL Beauty operates a classic prestige-beauty model built on frequent launches and an active promotional calendar. New fragrance flankers, seasonal and holiday makeup collections, limited editions, and trend-led shades arrive regularly, and the brand leans on gift-with-purchase offers, retailer events, and sale periods that encourage repeat and impulse purchasing. These are structural drivers of consumption rather than restraint.
