What Are Synthetic Fabrics? A Plain Guide To The Plastic In Your Wardrobe

Go and look at the label on whatever you are wearing right now. There is a better than even chance it says polyester, or nylon, or acrylic, or elastane, or some combination of all four.

That is not a guess. Synthetic fibers now make up around two thirds of everything the world makes clothing from, and polyester alone accounts for over half of global fiber production. Cotton, the fabric most people would name first if you asked what clothes are made of, sits at roughly a fifth.

Which means the honest starting point for this article is not "should you avoid synthetics" but "you are almost certainly wearing several right now, so what are they, and what does that actually mean?"

Here is the plain version: what synthetic fabrics are, how they get made, why they took over, what the real trade-offs are, and where they still make sense. We will try to do this without either the doom or the defensiveness that usually attaches to the topic.

Synthetic Fabrics At A Glance

  • The definition: Fibers made entirely from chemicals, usually derived from petroleum, rather than harvested from a plant or animal.
  • The big four: Polyester, nylon, acrylic, and elastane. Between them they cover most of what is in your wardrobe.
  • They are plastic. Not in a rhetorical sense. Polyester is PET, the same polymer as a drinks bottle.
  • The main environmental issues: Fossil fuel feedstock, high energy manufacturing, microfiber shedding in the wash, and effectively permanent persistence at end of life.
  • They are not all bad. Synthetics made clothing affordable and enable things natural fibers cannot do, from surgical sutures to firefighter turnout gear.
  • The useful distinction: Synthetic is not the same as semi-synthetic. Viscose, modal, and lyocell come from plants but are chemically processed, and they behave differently.

What Does "Synthetic" Actually Mean?

A synthetic fiber is one built from chemical building blocks rather than grown. The raw material is usually crude oil or natural gas. Refineries produce simple molecules called monomers, those monomers get linked into long chains through polymerization, and the resulting polymer is melted and pushed through a spinneret, which is essentially a showerhead with microscopic holes. The filaments that emerge are cooled, stretched, and spun into yarn.

That is the whole process. Oil in one end, thread out the other.

Compare that to cotton, which is a fiber that grows on a plant and gets picked, cleaned, and spun. Or wool, which grows on a sheep. Those are natural fibers, and the fiber you wear is structurally the fiber that grew.

Then there is a middle category that causes most of the confusion.

Semi-synthetic fibers, also called regenerated cellulose or man-made cellulosics, start as a natural material (usually wood pulp) that gets chemically dissolved and reformed into fiber. Viscose, rayon, modal, lyocell, and acetate all sit here. They are not synthetic, because the polymer came from a plant rather than a refinery. So the three-way split is: grown, refined from oil, or dissolved from a plant. Most confusion in fabric marketing comes from blurring the second and third.

The Main Types Of Synthetic Fabric

Polyester (PET). The dominant fiber on earth. Cheap, strong, wrinkle-resistant, holds dye well, dries fast. Chemically it is polyethylene terephthalate, the same polymer used for water bottles. It holds odor stubbornly, because the fiber is hydrophobic and bacteria colonize the oils that sit on the surface rather than being absorbed away. Found in almost everything: shirts, activewear, fleece, upholstery, thread, filling.

Nylon (polyamide). The first fully synthetic fiber, commercialized by DuPont in 1939 and introduced to the public through stockings. Stronger and more abrasion-resistant than polyester, with better elasticity. Used in hosiery, swimwear, outerwear shells, backpacks, and carpet. More energy-intensive to produce than polyester, and its manufacture releases nitrous oxide, a potent greenhouse gas, unless abatement equipment is fitted.

Acrylic. Developed as a wool substitute. Soft, lightweight, warm, and cheap, which is why it dominates budget sweaters, blankets, and fake fur. It pills badly, is one of the heaviest microfiber shedders in the wash, and is made from acrylonitrile, a chemical requiring careful handling in production.

Elastane (also spandex or Lycra, all the same fiber). The stretch fiber, invented in 1958. Almost never used alone, but blended at 2 to 20% into an enormous share of modern clothing. It is the reason your jeans move and your underwear stays up. It is also the reason many garments cannot be recycled, because separating a few percent of elastane from cotton is not currently practical at scale.

Polypropylene and olefin. Very light, does not absorb water at all, used in thermal base layers, outdoor furniture, and a lot of industrial textiles.

Aramids (Kevlar, Nomex). High-performance fibers for body armor, firefighting gear, and industrial safety. Nobody is making these into fast fashion, and nothing natural replaces them.

Acetate. Often listed alongside synthetics, but it is semi-synthetic, made from wood pulp. Worth knowing when you see it on a lining label.

Why Synthetics Took Over

It is worth being fair about this, because the answer is not simply that corporations tricked everyone.

Synthetics are cheap, often a fraction of the cost of natural fibers, and they decoupled clothing production from agricultural land. They are consistent, arriving with identical properties in every batch rather than varying by harvest. They are durable in specific ways, resisting abrasion, stretching, and shrinking. They do things natural fibers cannot: waterproof shells, four-way stretch, wicking base layers, parachutes, seatbelts, surgical mesh.

And they made clothing far more accessible. For most of human history, clothes were expensive enough to be inherited, repaired, and listed in wills. Synthetic fibers are a large part of why that changed. Whether the resulting volume of clothing has been good for us is a separate question, but the affordability was real.

The trade-offs are also real, and they arrived later.

The Actual Problems With Synthetic Fabrics

They start as fossil fuels. Textile production consumes a significant and growing share of global oil output. A polyester shirt has an extraction and refining footprint before a single thread is spun.

Manufacturing is energy-intensive. Polymerization and melt-spinning require sustained high temperatures. Polyester production generates substantially more emissions per kilogram than cotton, though cotton uses far more water, so the comparison depends on which impact you weight.

They shed microfibers. This is the issue that has changed most in the last decade. Every wash releases thousands of tiny plastic filaments too small for wastewater treatment to capture reliably. They end up in rivers, oceans, soil, and food chains, and estimates attribute a large share of ocean microplastic pollution to textile laundering. Fleece and acrylic are the worst offenders. This happens with every wash, forever, and there is currently no way to design it out of the fiber itself.

They do not break down. A polyester garment in landfill persists for centuries. It does not compost, it does not rot, it fragments slowly into smaller pieces of the same plastic.

Recycling is harder than it sounds. Most "recycled polyester" is made from drinks bottles rather than old clothing, which sounds good and is more complicated than it looks. Bottle-to-bottle recycling is a closed loop; bottle-to-textile takes a recyclable bottle and converts it into a garment that cannot be recycled again. It reduces virgin material use, which matters, but it is a one-way step rather than a circle. Textile-to-textile recycling exists but remains a small fraction of the market, and blended fabrics make it much harder.

Some chemistry is worth knowing about. Water-repellent finishes have historically used PFAS, the persistent compounds now being phased out under regulatory pressure in several markets. Antimony compounds are used as catalysts in most PET production. Independent testing has also reported bisphenols in some polyester activewear. None of this means your gym shirt is dangerous, but it does mean OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification, which tests finished textiles for harmful substances, is worth looking for on anything you wear against skin for long stretches. They are less pleasant to wear in most conditions. Not an environmental point, but the one people notice. Synthetics trap heat and moisture, hold odor, and feel clammy in warm weather.

Where Synthetics Still Make Sense

We are not going to pretend the answer is never.

Technical outdoor gear. A waterproof shell, a climbing rope, a life jacket. Natural alternatives either do not exist or do not perform, and in some cases the performance is a safety matter.

Medical and safety equipment. Sutures, implants, protective equipment, firefighter gear. This is not a fashion conversation.

Long-life items you already own. The most sustainable synthetic garment is the fleece you have worn for nine years. Replacing functional synthetics with new natural fiber items is usually worse than keeping what you have, because you have already paid the manufacturing cost and the replacement starts a new one.

Small amounts of elastane in things that need to stretch. Underwear that holds its shape for three years instead of four months is a reasonable use of 5% elastane. We made this argument at more length in our organic cotton underwear guide.

The useful distinction is between synthetics doing a job nothing else can do, and synthetics used because they are cheap. A polyester rain shell is engineering. A polyester summer dress is cost-cutting.

How To Tell What You Are Wearing

Read the label first. Composition labels are legally required in most markets and they are the fastest answer. Watch for blends, where a small elastane percentage changes the recycling and end-of-life picture entirely.

Learn the marketing names. Lycra is elastane. Dacron and Terylene are polyester. Orlon is acrylic. Microfiber is usually polyester, sometimes nylon. Performance, technical, and moisture-wicking almost always mean synthetic.

Use touch as a rough guide. Synthetics tend to feel slick or slightly plasticky, spring back sharply when crushed, and stay cool at first touch without ever feeling breathable. Natural fibers crease more and warm up against the skin.

The water drop test. A drop of water on cotton or linen soaks in fairly quickly. On polyester it tends to sit and bead.

You may see the burn test recommended, where a fiber sample is lit and identified by whether it melts into a bead (synthetic) or turns to soft ash (natural). It works, but it involves setting fire to things and inhaling fumes from burning plastic, so we would stick with the label.

Better Alternatives, By Job

For everyday clothing: Organic cotton, linen, and hemp. Breathable, durable, compostable at end of life, and far more pleasant in warm weather.

For softness and drape: Lyocell, especially TENCEL branded lyocell, made in a closed-loop process that recovers around 99% of its solvent. Semi-synthetic rather than natural, but one of the cleanest manufactured fibers available.

For warmth: Wool. It insulates when damp, resists odor without chemical treatment, and lasts decades. Look for responsible wool certification if animal welfare is a concern for you.

For bedding: Organic cotton, linen, or lyocell. Our bedding collection covers all three.

For stretch: Accept a small elastane percentage rather than chasing zero, or look at knit constructions that get their give from the stitch rather than the fiber.

Where nothing natural works: Buy recycled synthetic, buy it once, and keep it for a decade.

Reducing The Harm From Synthetics You Already Own

Throwing out functional clothing helps nobody. If your wardrobe is largely synthetic, which most people's is, these are the changes that actually move the needle.

Wash less often. The single most effective step. Most clothing needs airing rather than laundering, and every wash you skip is shedding avoided.

Wash cold, on gentle, with full loads. Heat, agitation, and loose loads all increase fiber loss. Full loads mean less friction between garments.

Use a filter bag or an in-machine filter. Purpose-made laundry bags capture a meaningful share of released fibers. Some newer machines have filters built in, and several jurisdictions are moving toward requiring them.

Skip the dryer. Tumble drying is hard on synthetic fibers and accelerates breakdown, and dryer lint is largely microfiber.

Buy fewer, better synthetics when you need them. A well-made technical jacket that lasts fifteen years is a fundamentally different product from a fast fashion equivalent that lasts two seasons.

At end of life, do not put them in the trash if you can help it. Textile recycling programs, brand take-back schemes, and specialist collectors will take synthetic garments that charity shops will not.

Are synthetic fabrics ever the right choice? Yes, when the job requires performance nothing natural can deliver, and when the alternative is replacing a functional item you already own. Waterproof shells, safety equipment, and technical sportswear are reasonable uses. A polyester t-shirt is not.

How can I tell if a fabric is synthetic without a label? Feel for slickness and sharp crease recovery, check whether water beads rather than absorbs, and look for marketing terms like performance, technical, or moisture-wicking, which nearly always signal synthetic content.

Why is elastane in almost everything? Because it works, and consumers have gotten used to clothing that stretches. It is the hardest synthetic to avoid, and at low percentages in long-lasting garments it is a reasonable trade-off.

Final Thoughts On Synthetic Fabrics

The useful thing to hold onto is that "synthetic" is a manufacturing description, not a moral one. Polyester holding together a life jacket and polyester in a $6 t-shirt are the same molecule doing very different work.

What has gone wrong is not the invention of these fibers. It is the volume. We now make and discard clothing at a scale that was impossible when everything had to be grown, and synthetics are what made that scale possible.

So the practical response is not to purge your wardrobe, which would waste the resources already spent on it. It is to wash what you own less and more gently, to catch what you can with a filter bag, and to choose natural or closed-loop fibers when you next buy something that does not need to be waterproof or stretchy or bulletproof.

Read the label, ask what the fiber is doing in the garment, and keep things longer. That covers most of it.
